In the absence of any really detailed close-up photographs, as in taken from three or 4 inches away, and maybe even in the presence of really detailed photographs, your best bet is to show it to one of the musical instrument auction house experts. Depending on where are you are you have access to Skinner, Tarisio, Brompton’s and probably individual dealers of wide respect and reputation.

I think it is a lovely instrument, and well worth investigating, but in person is probably your best bet

I am still waiting for somebody to give me some direction in identifying this cello. Somebody told me that it looks like the work of Chanot.

The f holes look a bit off for a Chanot to my eye, but I think there are similarities scrolling through online databases.  And the “bear claw” spruce, what main regions would we expect the source?  I’m only familiar with the western coast US and Canada source.  I would imagine there are other geographic sources... just not aware.

If you click on the pictures till you get the largest magnification there is quite a bit of detail.

I don't think I have seen such smeared-on varnish particularly on the top before.

It's not smeared-on varnish but exceptional figured bear claw spruce (Haselfichte).
