Barry J. Griffiths
I'm shipping a violin from Kentucky to New York. Given the choice of USPS, Fedex, and UPS what's the recommended way to go? I'm mostly concerned about which carrier does the best at honoring insurance claims. Thanks Barry
GeorgeH
I have never had a problem with USPS. However, I don't think that they will insure for more than $1,000. In regards to insurance, I photograph each step of packaging the instrument in detail, and then take pictures of the final box. I have never had an insurance claim on anything I have mailed, but just in case...

nathan slobodkin
Barry, On my website there is a video about packing instruments which includes a discussion of when and why to pick a carrier. I have never had to make a claim for damage and in fact have had an instrument shipped from Maine to Seattle via FedEx 2nd day which arrived still in tune. Is that to try and avoid the empty box scam? I'd be inclined to go with USPS because using the Post Office for fraud is still taken seriously. It's a government thing and not a private enterprise. I guess I am naive. Anyway, I photograph each step of packaging the instrument in case the violin is damaged during shipping and I need to have proof that it was in good condition, adequately packed, and the box was undamaged before it was shipped. brokenbow
Some of us include the front page of the newspaper printed the day we ship showing the date in our photos. Of course you have to have a subscription to the newspaper--something that is getting less and less common. I enjoy my small town paper. Be sure to call the paper.

Thanks Barry I would expect a major fight with any courier in the event of an insurance claim. I once lost a violin in Mexico when an entire DHL truck was stolen at gun point. Although DHL thenselves furnished this information, they wouldn’t pay out until I independently obtained a police report confirming the hold up. Crazy! Also, courier insurance charges are daylight robbery. much better to insure the violin for shipping with your regular instrument insurer.
