Al Cramer
I' m interested in German/French trade instruments, 1880-1920, and wondered what people thought about the tightness of the grain on the spruce tops. I have some notion that tighter grain ought to give a better sound, but maybe I really wrong about that. Would really like to hear what people with more experience think. Thanks! uncle duke
I would like the tighter grain over the wider but have you ever looked at the inside carving work in some of these? Grain width is the least of the concerns.
Thomas Coleman
IMHO The tightness of the grain has little to no bearing on a "better" sound. What the maker did with that grain is far more important.
martin swan
I think if you search Maestronet you will find quite a lot of discussion on this topic. General conclusion seems to be that grain width is relatively unimportant.
