Need opinion on possible maker

Recommended Posts

So I had bought this violin a few years ago and am still trying to hunt down a maker for the new owner of this violin who has not been able to track down who made it either, David Stone, Chris Reuning,Warren & Sons have looked at the instrument and said it’s Italian but no maker came to mind just looking for opinions because I’ve done just about all the research I can do

Inside work doesn't look like Füssen, more french IMO. Maybe the scroll is from something else?

Would be interesting to know if the LOB is 360 mm or longer.

Lob is 35.5 from what I remember it is was either 35.5 or 35.6

I really like the matched set it's fitted up with, which echoes the flame, but it appears to me that at some point, someone got a little enthusiastic with the varnish.  How does it sound?  :)

A bit of a give away, is how the linings meet the corner blocks, at a 30° (estimate) angle. One can see this (neatly done) on instruments like Schweizer (the real one) or Zach, down to Ferenzy or Prüller. The many Hungarian fakes are like that too (done rougher). The procedure with this violin, would be to really concentrate, and try to work out what is genuine ageing, and what could be intentional (good) antiquing.

A very nice violin. Does it sound nice?

Very high pine linings, not willow. And a very interesting way of deep channeling into the corners. Is this typical for any maker?

I guess the varnish is not original. It looks massively French polished.

The Füssen instruments I have seen all had a higher arching. This arching looks later.

Of course it appears to have had a darker varnish before, for instance clearly visible at the purfling corners, in the scratches or around the fluting of the plates.

A while ago we discussed the french rib construction, which was copied (as Jacob described) in Hungary, so this would make sense.

Yup.  And we all know what that means.  No reason to flog the current owner over it though, unless they had it done.
