Paganini's violins: Where are they now?

I see that Paganini had quite an illustrious stable of violins. He had to sell most if them off to pay debts.

Other than The Cannon - where did the rest end up?

The Strad quartet that used to be played by the Tokyo String Quartet is, I believe, still owned by the Nippon Foundation, a guitar by Lacote is in a museum in Paris.

 

He was, by all accounts, a dealer as well as a player, and there was the gambling problem. Lots of instruments carry his name. Lots of fine instruments.

When I was at the Kantonale Geigenbauschule, we went on Holiday to Genua, and Herr Auchli (one of the teachers) negotiated with Italian civil servants (masses of them) so that we could go into the council chamber and see „The Cannon“. It was in a glass case, and there was a button that you could press to make the fiddle spin around quite fast (you could almost make it giddy). Below it in the same case was the (stationary) Vuiallme „copy“ which according to legend he couldn’t tell from the original. That made it clear that Pagagnini must have been blind as a bat.

 

What was probably most impressive, was the next glass cabinet, which had Christopher Columbus’s toe nail in it.

I was meant to be in Genoa today! But I seem to be in Amsterdam ...

I tried to get to Genoa on April 1st but took a rash shortcut to the airport over a hill and got stuck in a snowdrift, can you believe it. Had to walk for half an hour in a blizzard in my best suit and shiny shoes to a farm, then give the guys £20 to tow me out with their tractor. Needless to say I missed the flight.

Well, that's one part of Columbus accounted for then! The world seems to be still debating where the rest of him is!

There's a new album out on the Dynamic label with artists using the Canone, Strad cello and Ory guitar that I was just listening to today. Not sure about his violins but the Ory guitar sounds very nice

If you are in Amsterdam right now, could you please look for the small bag my granddaughter forgot there in front of the train station last month?

Just remember when I got stuck in a snowdrift once in Poland and one of this local farmers came and towed the car out with his bare hands (didn't take money for it).
