Paranoid times Posted March 19, 2018 Report Posted March 19, 2018 Here is the issue, I would upload pictures of the violin... however I did so in a Facebook group and everyone wanted to turn the focus on the violin... My question is simple, has anyone seen a label like this? The little handwritten circles on the boarder ect... and if so can you show me one? This vioin has long been a issue for me, as the maker... this part of the label is missing, if it was a factory violin German or otherwise... more labels like it would be out there, but in all of my years I have yet to find one...
GeorgeH Posted March 20, 2018 Report Posted March 20, 2018 Welcome to MN! Many people put labels in trade violins that they did not make. Perhaps this is one of them. You should post pictures of the violin. If people recognize the maker of the violin, then maybe they could recognize the label.

Was it improperly removed from a different violin that resulted in this weird shape and then badly glued into this violin? Bottom of the label seems rather loose...
Paranoid times Posted March 20, 2018 Author Report Posted March 20, 2018 I understand... however I have been down this road before... as I said this is a question about the label... the marks, circles format ect... when I post pictures of the violin people focus more on it then the do the question... as for label condition I think it was eaten off, but it’s in there fairly good, and passed the uv light test... i can assure you if I posted pictures, some one will say German factory, another will say something else... this has been the case for 20 years... I even had a expert in New York... tried to buy it on the spot, I was up there for a book signing and at the time this was my favorite violin, she went with me everywhere... at this moment she is apart on my workbench, the poor girls neck has falling...

Yes, you have to watch out for those tiny violin elves... they like to snack on the labels.

Of course they want to focus on the violin, the label is almost certainly spurious. Vast numbers of trade violins have been made and dispatched to wholesalers and retailers without labels. Thus the recipient could choose to sale the violin without a label, or insert there own. Whoever owned the violin before you has hand written a very crude label, and, mistakenly, thinking it would look more original, has ripped the edges. If you post pictures of the violin the experts will tell you what the violin actually is.
jacobsaunders Posted March 20, 2018 Report Posted March 20, 2018 The part of the label one may see in your picture, seems to say “Mittenwald Anno 1878“. Someone seems to have scrubed the first line away, the normal reason for that would be that what it said was of pecunary dissadvantage to some dealer. If the label had anything to do with who made the fiddle or not (unlikely), cannot be speculated upon, without seeing the instrument.
martin swan Posted March 20, 2018 Report Posted March 20, 2018 Your concern is clearly the identity of the violin, and you are isolating the label in the hope that this will get you the information you want ... I don’t think anyone here can help you. My only observation on the label is that it looks homemade.
