JacksonMaberry Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 Folks, For 40 years, IU has had a violin shop and violinmaking program, but now our professor is retiring and the department has not yet begun a search for his replacement. Myself and my fellow students have drafted a petition intended to show support for continuing the program, which has the backing of the string faculty. If you would be so kind as to sign the petition, it would mean a lot to us. If we're successful in persuading the administration to retain the program, there will be a job opportunity, perhaps for one of the maestros/maestras on this site! https://www.thepetitionsite.com/832/149/843/keep-the-iu-jacobs-school-of-music-violin-shop-open/ Thanks for your consideration! And a note to Jeffrey: if this is not an appropriate topic for the Pegbox, please move or delete as you see fit. I wasn't sure where best to share this. Thanks for your understanding.
Televet Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 Done. Best wishes to you and I hope this works out.
devaraja42 Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 I do hope the program is able to continue! I'm actually applying to IU right now (I have my audition on Friday) and the violin making class was a major draw for me.
Matthew Hannafin Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 Despite being generally underwhelmed with Indiana due to their over enforcement of "speeding laws" I signed
JacksonMaberry Posted March 1, 2018 Author Report Posted March 1, 2018 I'm very grateful to each of you who has signed. Thank you! In one day we've already received 200 signatures! Hoping to keep this momentum. =)
Nick Allen Posted March 1, 2018 Report Posted March 1, 2018 I added mine. Don't wanna see a great thing fall by the wayside. Is there anything else I can do to help?
l33tplaya Posted March 1, 2018 Report Posted March 1, 2018 Done. Is it true you've invited Jeffrey, Martin, Jacob, David, and VdA to apply?
David Beard Posted March 1, 2018 Report Posted March 1, 2018 I signed also. I'm glad there are such schools. Though I believe apprenticing with an established maker who makes the way you aspire to would still be the best way for making, and working in a major shoo best for any other aspect of the trade. With making I believe there will always be a few who carver their way in along a unique path. Most of all, I don't think there can ever be a well paved way in. Such a thing would always deliver too many to a too generic end point. A further one on one or perhaps solo journey will still be essential.

scordatura Posted March 7, 2018 Report Posted March 7, 2018 Signed. As a graduate of IU I would like to see this program continue. I remember Ole Dahl!

Thomas Coleman Posted March 7, 2018 Report Posted March 7, 2018 2 hours ago, jacobsaunders said: What is a “violinmaking programme” at an American university, and why on earth would I support it? It's a joke. Apparently I33tplaya respects your knowledge and skills enough to joke that you were invited to fill the teachers spot at the school.
David Burgess Posted March 7, 2018 Report Posted March 7, 2018 5 hours ago, jacobsaunders said: What is a “violinmaking programme” at an American university, and why on earth would I support it? Well, there's Oberlin, which has almost universal respect on Planet Earth (is also gaining respect on Mars), and may be gaining respect even beyond our solar system. (One should not assume that the "fireflies" we often see at Oberlin are necessarily natural terrestrial insects. More likely, they are tiny flying alien spybots.)

It's a maker's school with the unusual distinction of being attached to a university conservatory, Janos Starker helped found it, and you should support it because we're all asking you to, very, very nicely.
JacksonMaberry Posted March 8, 2018 Author Report Posted March 8, 2018 I understand completely if you would prefer not to sign, Jacob, but it would mean a lot to all of us in the shop if you would.

Oh, Janos Starker. Are they the ones who drill holes in Cello Bridge legs then?

Someone kindly asked for your help, if you can't or won't give it why would you flame them? Is that a "yes" or a "no"?
JacksonMaberry Posted March 8, 2018 Author Report Posted March 8, 2018 We are not taught to drill holes in cello legs.
