That IS a pretty bow - curious how it plays, considering it is slightly on the heavy side. However, I've played "heavy" violin and viola bows that feel light due to the balance point and stiffness.

Not sure why this wood was chosen with golden mounts as it looks of inferior quality... That Tourte has got some nasty beautiful wood!

What would make you think this was inferior?

Hmm i stand my case. Looks awesome on the martin swan photo's! For some reason (Maybe my monitor?) makes tarisio's bows all seem very bleak and overexposed. Can't see any grains and the one's that I can see are very short that's why it looked inferior.

Ive always found Tarisio bow photos look like that ,almost impossible to get a good idea of what the wood looks like. When is Swan going to stop posting links to his web shop??

Chris ,i dont think its the same bow unless it managed to change from round to octagonal.(or is that my eye sight)

Maybe I am getting something wrong, but the Tarisio one does not seem to be same as on Martin's homepage ...

Different eye, button, certificate, figure, ...

Edit: Oops, was mentioned already

Hi Michael

You're right it's not the same bow, just similar wood and mounts. the one in our sold items is a Peccatte model

Fiddlecollector - I did recently link to an item for sale in a particular context. I thought it was relevant and I apologized for the ungentlemanly behaviour. Otherwise I link to items which are in our archive and which are relevant to the debate. Everyone does that - they just don't happen to keep these items in an organized public database. if you would rather that I take the photos from the website (not a "web shop") and post them individually then maybe you could lobby Maestronet to make that a policy.

This Sartory bow was something we sold almost a year ago - we aren't trying to sell it.

Martin,

I think that this is a legit point of view, but there are others possible, too. I personally am using your "Sold Items" archive as a reliable source, like others are doing, but to find it it's necessary only to click on your advertising in the header (sponsoring this website, what's an appreciated attitude) or even a Google search for your name. OTOH, a direct link to this archive is just a single click away from the items for sale, and I guess that's what FC had in mind.

There was a german online seller contributing to some discussions with direct links to her shop, what caused an intervention by Jeffrey; not exactly what you are doing usually. But I remember that the possibility to set website links under each post was deleted with the last update, so I think that the policy is clear. I'm supposing to copy and paste the photos and telling "from our archive of sold items" would be more PC.;)

Happy to do that if people want. I am often on the move, working from an iPhone, and such cutting and pasting makes my head hurt.

I'm afraid the photos will all have our logo on since we are trying to protect people against fraudulent usage.

However, I do also object to posts which are attempting to sell or to advertise specific items, so if there's a general feeling that direct links to items in our sold archive is "too commercial" I will go with the consensus.

Martin, I think that your site is very useful as a reference, and I have never seen you post anything in a thread that felt like an advertisement. Plus, you are a long-time sponsor of MN, and therefore, you're helping to keep the lights on here. I think we all can appreciate that.

But I still feel sorry for Larry...;):D

I really appreciate the photos.  I hope you continue to post them as reference as required.

I don't think it's all that hard for a reader to separate commercial intent from academic intent.

Beautiful bows, thanks for sharing!  Is it safe to say that bows that display prominent figuration tend to be unstained/not artificially darkened bows?

I can't help but share a recent acquisition of mine from, of all places, eBay - a Nurnberger supposedly from the estate of a 'strings teacher'  that I 'buy it now'ed. The dark low quality photos had convinced me that it was a genuine Nurnberger, but imagine my surprise when it arrived and it had the most spectacular wood! It's also my first fine bow without artificially darkened wood. The bow is actually layered in sticky rosin grime and I can't get the figure to photograph as vividly as the pros here but I'll share some photos. Interestingly the flame pops out much more on my cell photos with flash - I suspect a flash for my big camera would help. Interestingly, the bow feels light and flexible- typically flamed wood seems to make heavier bows.

Another bow with heavy flaming that I remember is this nice Charles Peccatte from Tarasio. Love it!

Anyone else see something wrong in the head wood of the OP? Just the photo?

Yes looks like it has a shake/check  in the wood going from top to half way down the side of the head. Quite common in bow blanks and often only noticable when subjected to heat whilst bending or gets dirt in the end grain on the head. May be just a just mark though but thats what it looks like. They arent usually a problem depending on where they are .

We had a short discussion a while ago about highly figured fernambuco, which is often of irregular growth, so that it gets broken easily. I had some of this qualiy with repaired cracks.

I, too, really appreciate your photos, and am not under any impression of being "commercialized" while reading your posts.

We all see things differently, and I feel everyone should have how they feel taken into account, but I also have never felt you were using the forum as a sales venue. OTOH, I do hate your site because it makes me want to come try some of your goodies, and you are thousands of miles and an ocean away, lol. :)

I like this type of wood. I have a bow with this kind of figure in it, not intensity like that Sartory have though.
