Jaster
Hello, I am looking for a bow from Tarisio auction. My budget is maximum $6000 (including premium), and it seems that there are some fine bows within the price range in this auction. The problem is I am not in the US, so commissioning is impossible. It would be much appreciated if someone shares his/her opinion, who commissioned bows at Tarisio New York. (Especially Lot54(Morizot), Lot81(Martin), Lot89(Thomassin)) Any recommendation is also welcome Thanks. violinbridges
Jaster I am curious why only tariso, especially if you dont live in the US.I am sure those are nice bows but If you wait a month, all the major online auction house will be having fine instruments sales in March. I would look at amberviolins.com, ingles and hayday, amati and bromptons. A huge amount of choice to the discerning buyer.
GeorgeH
My advice would be don't spend $6000 on a bow that you have not seen, held, and tried. If you want to go the auction route, buy a plane ticket to see the bows in person before you bid.

Invariably, one ends up either falling in love with something else or nothing at all. If you're a player, a picture just isn't enough! John_London
I fancied a bow in that auction. However, adding the risk of buying unseen / untried to the hassle of import duties and VAT in Europe (unless it is over 100 years old), and in the worst case an argument over import of ivory and pernambuco as protected species, and it just does not add up in my mind. I asked them whether I could pick up a New York purchase from the Tarisio London office, and they said 'no.' (Regulations, apparently.) Televet
John_L, FWIW, The export certificates and CITES paperwork is taken care of by Tarisio for a fixed fee, and is pretty painless. It just delays delivery by a couple of weeks. On the other hand the spring sale season is just ready to start in London, with Amati, Bromptons and Ingles & Hayday in March and the London sales often seem to have an excellent section of bows right on your doorstep, and Paris is only a day-trip! violinbridges
Jaster we should also say welcome to maestonet with your first post. Televet, I know for sure amberviolins also has a fine sale in london in march and one also finishing in a week..does tarsio also have a fine sale in london? Bows for players are always so personal, I like to try them.

Yes. I bought a bow in Bromptoms for own use in the last sale and will not even pick it up from rehairing until next week. Probably paid over the odds as the famous stamp, though possibly geniuine, may mean 'from the workshop of' rather than being a master-made item. No one else even bid the reserve so that it is a clue! Should have gone to a dealer, they have worked out how to get the best deals at auction. Still, the auction lottery is fun!
puckfandan
The Hippolyte Lamy may go for a bargain? https://tarisio.com/auctions/auction/lot/?csid=2198716416&cpid=3500982272&filter_key=5fb36602e09873f7ec9362c90d9ecdfc&kws=Lamy

germain
I played most of the higher end ones... this one felt great https://tarisio.com/auctions/auction/lot/?csid=2198716416&cpid=3512664064&filter_key=a7a8ae0fc59b456c9d97916de73c5b10&sCategory_ID=
martin swan
One of the best playing bows we have at the moment is a gold mounted Tubbs - he must be the most inconsistent maker ever, but the good stuff is phenomenal.

Maybe the good ones were made by him and the bad ones... well how many of em do you think there are? Yes I'm super skeptical, but at the same time, hoping to be super impressed.
