Christian Bayon's Bass Bar In the Feb. 18 Strad

Recommended Posts

Well, that's interesting. What I had in my mind was doing the reverse, that is having the base of the triangle glued with the cutouts on that surface. I should have looked at the pictures posted more closely. Now I can see why it is somewhat controversial. I can see, though, the wider glueing surface at each end would make it quite stable, and it should be even easier to fit and glue, so that makes it even more interesting. My only question, judging by the pics of it and its inherent strength, is whether it is unnecessarily  big.

I get the impression, rightly or wrongly,  that many makers are making thin tops with less dense spruce. And I can't see a stronger bass bar as an ideal solution to any problems that might arise from that.

The instruments in the videos sound exceptionally open and responsive.  I would be more convinced if there was a before and after demo.  I have the feeling Christian's instruments would sound good either way.
