bench vise material

Recommended Posts

I face my jaws with 1/4" Masonite. It's a nice, tough surface, and it takes the wear so my actual vise jaws don't. When the Masonite becomes excessively worn I simply remove and replace it. I learned that technique years ago from Jim Krenov.

I use an ordinary steel machinist's vise; usually when I clamp something in the vise, there's lots of rough material to remove, so I don't worry about marring the surface. For finished items, I put some rubber floor matting material between the jaws to protect finished surfaces.
