Files??

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some info/recommendations on what files folks are using for edge/scroll/etc.. work ??? [makers/sources?]

I have a pretty solid collection of Liogier Rasps [Left handed no less :) ] but only standard "Nicholson"  mill and bastard files that are really intended for metal work.

I have a nice Grobet birds tongue crossing file that I use for a variety of tasks. I also have a Grobet flat double cut fine file that I also use for things like nuts, scroll chamfers, etc.

I'll post some pics when I get home.

You can buy Grobet files from MSC industries.

Website is not easy to navigate, I'd just call, they are very helpful.

Their website is not very well designed, if you search Grobet hand files, it doesn't show up, but they carry them, better price than German vn suppliers.

Salespersons are friendly and patient.

I haven't had to see what Grobet is about yet but did go have a look at two of my work horse files for violin.  First is a 8" Tome Feteira which gives an aggressive cut and the other is a Finland made 6" half-round that also gives an aggressive cut - this one has a "W" stamped above Finland.

Maybe Peter or others who live up north may know what the Finnish brand is and possibly Luis or Christian may know what Tome Feteira is about.

How these two files made it to the states is unknown to me.
