100 Year Old Violin Pegs

I have an old Stainer violin copy from the early 1900s and it needs new pegs.

I am trying to find pegs that are similar to what it was originally built with, but the original pegs are much wider than anything I can find.

The pegs measure 24 mm in width. Pegs I have purchased are 22 mm.

There is a notable difference when viewed side by side.

Is this typical of pegs made in that era or do you think maybe they are viola pegs?

I thought I would be able to find a lot of knowledgeable luthiers on this forum, but it's been many months since I posted this question and I have not received a reply.

Maybe I need to reword may question. My apologies if I was not clear.

I don't know if those are typical of the era.  They could be viola pegs.  Pegs come in so many subtle -- and not-so-subtle -- variations in size and shape that it can be impossible to match any given peg exactly without having a set custom made.  I think this would be prohibitively expensive for a typical 100 year old Stainer copy.  In your position, I would look at what's available in viola pegs.  Dictum has a pretty good peg selection that you can see here:

If you see pegs you like, you will either have to order them from Germany yourself or have a violin shop order them for you from Howard Core, Dictum's American distributor, because Core only sells through shops.

You probably never initially received a useful reply because there is no easy solution to your problem.

I realize there is no exact match. I was hoping someone may have worked on several old violins and could say either peg heads were typically larger or the original pegs must have been replaced with viola pegs.

I like your suggestion to purchase pegs directly from Dictum, this way I know they are good quality.

They provide a lot of specifications, but not the head width. I sent them an email asking for the head widths and I will purchase the viola pegs if they are close to 24 mm.

I can use the other pegs I have to practice changing the taper, it looks like these are 1:25.

I received a reply from Dictum, they were not very helpful.

I guess I'll just order the viola pegs.
