Mille regardz
Whenever I see cheap violin making tool sets on websites like eBay, AliExpress, etc. (which I probably shouldn't be looking at at all, I know ) , very often this kind of tool is included: I haven't been able to find what the tool is for, can anyone enlighten me? Thanks

Thomas Coleman
Doesn't seem like a very practical burnisher. What surface is used?

I bought a cello reamer on AliExpress for 20 bucks. Works like a charm.

I as wrong,it looked like my burr tool, but on eBay they call that thing a palette knife sharpener https://m.ebay.com/itm/VIOLIN-LUTHIER-PURFLING-GROOVE-CUTTING-TOOL-and-palette-knife-sharpener/172566641451?hash=item282dc5fb2b%3Ag%3AeYgAAOSwB-1YqO97&_trkparms=pageci%3Ace1a792a-bebc-11e7-88ec-74dbd1a0e177%7Cparentrq%3A75d4718615f0a861922a0b5bffff55cc%7Ciid%3A5
JohnCockburn
As you said originally, Carl, it's a scraper burnisher, the "palette knife sharpener" thing is just a mistranslation, as often seen for Chinese tools on eBay.
Stavanger
Yeah, I have one too (allthou I rather use a rod burnisher) and it is indeed a burnisher, essentially just a hardened piece of steel to make burr on a scraper. Any edge can be used.
Coo von Turra
Listed as a tool for shoving purfling into the Chanel?

Maybe, but I wouldn't think of it as anything close to the ideal tool for that job. For pushing purfling into the groove, I mostly use something like a window screen replacement tool, a narrow wheel on bearings. Still using the roller tool Mark Norfleet and I came up with about 40 years ago, made from parts of a bicycle derailleur.

Thomas Coleman
eh, it probably works great. I guess I'm just used to the long rod type.
Mille regardz
Thanks for all your answers! Funny enough, I never see it in a set with scrapers, but almost always together with knives. Maybe Ali himself also doesn't really know what it is
