BigFryMan
Thanks for all the tips and hilarity! Here is the result of my first graft with the plate about 90% arched: Far from perfect, but should be structurally sound and do it's job. Violadamore
Oh, nice. Ebony collar. You can charge extra for that.

nathan slobodkin
Where I trained there was a saying among the lead men that someone was fully trained when he could do his job with a hangover the day after his wife left him. In other words paying attention can only get you so far where as following proper procedures will get satisfactory results every time. In this case if you stop your scribe and pen lines 10 mm. on either side of the rib join your eye picks up the gap as you are sawing and there is no way you will cut off the button even if you forgot to draw it out completely. Conor Russell
We were taught to make two straight cuts, one on each side first, before anything else. I still do, every time. I glued a treble bar into a cello a few years ago. I couldn't believe myself!

My problem (probably shared with other makers) is that I do this on a casual basis and forget to follow what I did previously. So now, I have a checklist. I just have to remember to check it beforehand. I sawed off the button only once because now I pencil in a big SAVE over the location where it will eventually reside.
