antero Report post Posted February 2, 2017 I would appreciate very mych any information regarding wide violin bow frog: heel of the frog on the violin bow has the width of the cello bow frog. And it fits perfectly it is not just a cello frog refitted, it seems to be made this way on purpose. What is this, someone's experiment? Or wider practice? By whom (country, region, factory) ? I have one on a stick stamped Hill & Sons (doubtful).
Greg F. Report post Posted February 2, 2017 I have one on a nondescript (German, as I recall) stick as well. Such "wide body" frogs were offered on bows sold by Sears in the early 1900s.
GeorgeH Report post Posted February 2, 2017 Does the frog have a rounded heel? It could be a viola bow.
antero Report post Posted February 3, 2017 No, the heel is usual 90 degrees. I don't remember the weight - it could be slightly on the heavier side but have to check. Sorry for bad picture but the shape is visible.
Brad Dorsey Report post Posted February 3, 2017 I see bows with wide frogs like that occasionally. They are never what would be considered fine bows, and I don't know specifically where they originate. If the extra width were somehow helpful, all bows would be made this way. Since they're not, I consider this type of bow to be a failed experiment -- an evolutionary dead end in bow design.
fiddlecollector Report post Posted February 3, 2017 Ive seen JTL bows like this , but hard to tell anything further from the photo ,apart from the frog is wide.
Greg F. Report post Posted February 3, 2017 Here's one I have that is marked Germany and also some info from a 1908 Sears catalog for a bow with a similar adjuster that has "extra wide frog".
Greg F. Report post Posted February 3, 2017 This thread shows a catalog page with a wide frog bow:
antero Report post Posted March 2, 2017 Thank you, Greg F.! It was interesting to learn that this extra wide frog must have been an industrial scale experiment at the time.
