Violin ID...again! English or French?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone has any idea of what it could be?  It doesn't look like a commercial German violin to me, could this be a French or English violin? The vanish is quite yellowish, and the arching is flat.

Thank you for the inputs!

Dutzendarbeit?

I think I need to re-read Jacob's "Dilemma: Verleger Mittenwald or Dutzendarbeit" thread and DIY

It doesn't look like a revanished violin to me though, vanish has been (over) polished recently

Thanks a lot Blank face!

Dutzendarbeit?

The best English translation of „Dutzendarbeit“ is probably „Cottage industry“

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putting-out_system“

which was prevalant in many trades, including violin making. „Dutzend“ means „dozen“, and „Arbeit" „work“, since these wares were traditionally delivered in dozens

BF is using a term for the cottage industry violins (mostly) made in Markneukirchen/Shoenbach region, what you are probaby refering to in your original post as commercial German.  And yes, those peg hole should  be bushed.  No doubt on the fact that that instrument has  been stripped and revarnished too.   jeff
