Help me identify this violin

Recommended Posts

To my eye this is a very standard early 20th century Mirecourt student violin, something like a Dulcis et Fortis or Bertholini.

It has some features which are also found on Schoenbach violins but the varnish, the arching, the pegbox carving, the big shapely button, flat scroll eyes and various other things all say Mirecourt to me.

Thanks Martin.

What are the various other Mirecourt like features?

Maybe the squared off corners, the rather wide grain of the top?

Very even somewhat flat edgework? Robust pegbox?

Anything else?

Don't see much Schoenbach but what features did you think could be?

Thanks Martin. This is very informative. I wish there is a "guide of violin identification for dummies" as it is a fairly addictive exercise :P

Could you indicate what makes the varnish, the arching and the pegbox carving so characteristic to the Mirecourt violins? And I also wonder what the T means...

It sounds horrible! But that's to be expected - I'm just starting. I stuck on some new Dominant strings and they've only just stopped stretching.

I asked my violin teacher and she said it looks okay and not too cheap. So I think it's a good student level violin and could probably do with a new bridge and maybe some setup tweaks. It was either this or a Stentor II.

I liked picking one up that didn't have a label as I think they're just a distraction and people really seem to bid up on them, unless it explicitly says it's a copy of a Strad or Guarneri.
