Why do you call the purfling unique?  It looks fairly standard black-white-black to me.

Exactly! It looks a bit like an old Saxon one that didn't originally have purfling, that someone purfeld, and generally tarted up in the vain hope that some gullible individual would think that it could be “valuable”. Perhaps that could be why the OP found the purfling a little peculiar.
