Unusual wood?

I'd guess it's more "usual" maple that you'd find everywhere... lots of random swirls and knots, rather than the more selected, uniform cuts usually used for instruments.  Looks like a tan stain or dark amber varnish, overcoated with a light orange.

I think it is rather cool looking.. .but I am wondering how true the photograph colours are.

It might not be as pretty in real lufe...
