Who is this violin maker?

peace

Recommended Posts

One of my friends just emailed me this eBay win and asked me about the name that is written on the label inside. He says there is also a monogram with letters look like OB inside a circle at the beginning of the name.

I have a hard time deciphering the spelling of the violin maker's name so will some of the Maestronet experts out there help me out please. Who is this maker and what are the worth of his violins? Is the first letter of his last name Q? P? B? R? I have not seem this name before. The spelling is  Greek to me.

I will appreciate any information or comments.

^It is Bruckner or Brückner.  Here is her younger sister (note photo of label).  The op's fiddle, is that a wolf eliminator on the E string?  It looks like the tailpiece is as far away from the bridge as it can be.  If you move the tailpiece toward the bridge it might calm it down.   I've noticed ebay search doesn't match 'u' and 'ü' but it should.

Otto Bruckner was a trademark of Scherl and Roth, in Cleveland, starting 1927 according to the website Trademarkia.com. The trademark was a stylized signature:

Tarisio have a sales of two violins by Otto Friedrich Bruckner (1877 – 1939) and have some nice images of those violins.

I confess to not having clicked either of the ebay listings!

The monogram is for the very nice E. H. Roth case, but has nothing to do with the violin.  The Otto Brückner fiddles were Scherl & Roth's higher quality line.  This violin was made in East Germany (the DDR), BTW.  From what one can see, the bow may be good, too.  If it has no hidden problems and sounds good, your friend did all right, IMHO.  :)

Oddly enough, it seems that the real Otto Brückner was alive at the time and is mentioned in Migma (Marknuekirchen guild for "musikinstrumenten handwerker) books. He died in 1969.

That would make this strictly something for Jacob S. to call.  :)

Very true, indeed! :)

So I instantly add a disclaimer that I definitely have not met herr Brückner in person, but just found these few details from a posting, made by Markneukirchen Museum of Musical Instruments; they were replying to an inquirer.

Migma was by definition a guild (still there) of handcraft meisters, but they did all kind of things during DDR, I guess.

I have one violin (pretty, definitely handmade, not excellent player, though) with their lebel and a couple of OK student level recorders.

Migma cooperative during the DDR of course had their own label (I will post one day, when I am old enough), which is very different, but Scherl&Roth of course could use the one of their own.

After all, direct reference to a country that US did not officially recognise, would not have been perhaps good for business.

There was a sivori bow thread on MN in 1999.

I would add a link but,- ... - MN does not yet accept that from me.

I am really getting curious whether this will be resolved after my 10th posting or rather needs MN platform a serious upgrade (or smth)

Restrictions are lifted after 10 posts.  Seems to have worked for most everyone else so far.   :)
