Need Help, Need to Arrange for a Viola Case in the UK

Good Monday Morning All,

I need to arrange for a viola case in the UK.  I need to send it to a maker to have a viola shipped to me here in the US.  Is there a UK equivalent of Shar or someone like that that I could just call, use a credit card and take care of it over the phone?

I am a little out of it but I am hopeful this is not too big a thing.  I don't have time to have a case made and it is about a 16" viola.

Thanks Folks,

Dwight

The maker should be able to order a case for you.  16" isn't an unusual size.  But if you want to you can also buy a case from a UK supplier and have them send it directly to whoever is making your viola. I buy stuff from the UK on a regular basis, never had an issue.

I also tend to phone and talk to people directly...lol.

Hello?  England?  This is Canada calling....

Violists know that the size and measurements of the instrument vary a lot.  The widths of the bouts can be significantly different between instruments of the same body length.  If the maker can send an outline or measurements  to the supplier of the case that would be a good idea.

dwight,

if you're looking for a case just to ship the viola once, i wouldn't know where to look,

however hiscox make a bombproof viola case, my mum has had the violin version for about 20 years and nothing has broken yet !

Hi Dwight.

I've had quite a few instruments shipped from the UK.  Normally it's the responsibility of the shipper to supply case or packing materials.  Recently, I've imported two instruments and had them shipped by Mailboxes Mayfair.  The shipping information is on the Brompton's site.  MM have always packed very carefully and the instruments always arrived intact.  I did communicate with them by phone.

Odd that your maker won't take care of this and bill you, but if he won't, since you're ordering from the States and paying in dollars, consider one of the bigger European internet/mailorder stores like Thomann (http://www.thomann.de/fr/index.html) which does alot of volume and has low prices. On top of that, the Euro is quite low compared to the dollar, so even with shipping to the UK , you might come out ahead.

I have a Hiscox case and they are indeed bombproof; they cite an example of one of their guitar cases being driven over by a car. But they are heavy and you get extra fitness as a bonus from using one.
