Love those pics Christian!

Very interesting how in some of the pics of the top, the color density is mostly independent of the surface texture.   Some of the pics show very dramatic surface variation with no corresponding variation in color.  Strongly suggests that the color is below the varnish creating the surface texture.  Other pics in your set show significant wood texture, with patterned wear.  These do show the color varying with the wood wear.  Again suggesting the color is very close to the wood.

In this regard, these pis of the top contrast with some Montagnana cello varnish pics which show dramatic varnish surface texture, but with color variation tracking with the varnish texture.  In that case, the pics suggest strong color in the upper layers of varnish creating the texture.

However, a couple of your pics do show color in the outer surface texture of varnish.  Particularly the darkest, dirtiest parts.  Like the scroll pics, and some of the areas around the sound holes.
