We went to Moose Jaw this spring...it's not far from Antler...or Oxbow...while on our way to Big Beaver... ;)

***p.s.

BTW...Climax was an anti-climax...but maybe because it was too far away from Romance and Conquest?

Canada's east coast has lots of interesting town/village names...

"Dildo" Newfoundland

"Crapaud" Prince Edward Island.

Imagine...

Fecit Crapaud

Don't forget Intercourse, PA, or that charming Austrian village I won't name that keeps getting its town limits sign stolen by British tourists, or this place in Lower Saxony....

Oh, welcome, BTW  :)

What was in your eggnog, ladies and gentlemen?

2:1 Nog to egg ratio.  At least 2:1, that is.  The more the merrier.  bottle-smiley.gif?1292867559

BTW, Addiewell is a former chemical plant site that now hosts a maximum security prison.

And David, I thought Ann Arbor was Charles Avsharian's wife?  ba_dum__ching_by_draygone.gif

Hi Jackson.  I'm sure you will find lots of good information on this forum, and some advice when you inevitably get tripped up (as we all do from time to time). Everyone's perspective is different, but my thoughts on making instruments is that you're better off getting some hand tool skills and instrument knowledge through repairs before making an instrument.  I started my first instrument while I was in school studying string instrument repair.  I was so horrified that I never finished the instrument, although I was more than half way done.  I spent 10 more years in shops doing repair before I completed my first instrument, and it was far more satisfying than my first attempt.  I studied with a master maker in a small group of about 6 people.  The students were split between novices and violin making school graduates, and it was really helpful to learn in a collaborative environment with the tool skills to better execute the various tasks at hand.  I'm sure you'll figure out something that works for you.  Good luck.

I think VMs should just invent their own place names.

Addie's Rare and Fine Violins, on the shores of Madder Lake. :P

You should see the fall color!

Fiddletown, CA

Pegville, CT

Stringtown, OK

…but for bow and bridge one has to go to England, to Bowbridge, Gloucestershire.

BTW, Walla Walla isn’t so bad name, at least it is easier to remember if spoken twice. Something like Baden-Baden.

Yellowknife is lovely!  It's the capital city of the Northwest Territories.  But it's far far away.  Really far far away.  It has a population of 20,000.  If there are more than a few fiddle players up there, I'd be surprised.  The only way you could make a living as a luthier up there is if you were independently wealthy and had your own airplane so you could fly to more populated areas to sell instruments and buy supplies...like Toronto...

Cut Knife, Saskatchewan might be a better bet.  Population of 500 - but only a 2 hour drive from Saskatoon (that has an international airport)...but still far far away from Toronto...

If the VSA were to host it's annual meeting there...that would help the economy too!  The first VSA meeting would be a blast!  Tents and porta-potties for everyone!  Wear tall boots and watch out for snakes!

It has the potential to become a mecca!!! :)

It has been mentioned before.  I think most of us lucky enough to have gotten to a school or one of the workshops would agree that those experiences are among the happiest of times.  Put it in a place with fishing, boating, and a few amenities and there you'd have it!

Maybe "commune" isn't quite the right term.  But having some support and inspiration sounds nice.

Are you still trading Cabernet for materials Jackson?

When I last moved, and was looking for a place where I could both live and work..., I really wanted to find a suitable place in “Hell”. (Michigan). That would have been a very unique label...  Unfortunately I’m just another of the masses in Ann Arbor.

No sir, I'm out of the booze biz entirely.

"Mark Norfleet - fecit Hell anno 2021" has quite the ring to it!

I reached out to Burgess Vineyards in the Napa Valley to see if we could do something mutually promotional (mostly, I was looking for a discount on something like a case at a time, versus what I was paying retail to buy Burgess wine one bottle at a time, which I give to various people for various reasons).

I never received a response. :o

So screw 'em. :P

Coincidentally, the winery burned down in 2020.
