I know that Strad added extra wings to a narrow maple back so as not to waste the wood..

I have some quarter sawn curly cherry with a width of 38 mm.  I normally carve Strad scrolls to a width of 41-42 mm at the eyes.  I am thinking of add an extra 2 mm on each side of the head of the scroll.  This essentially will end up being the rounded part of the eye where the chamfer starts. I think it will blend in.

Has this been done before?

If you study my article on scroll angle templates you may use any width and still end up with a classic design. See the link below.

Thanks for posting those pictures Ron.

Some aspects of the violin are purely aesthetic. Besides focusing on just the scroll area, I think the overall proportions of the scroll to the rest of the violin are an important element. Is it possible to post full side, front and back pix to see how those long eyes/ears look from a distance?

Thanks for the full length pictures. I cannot say I dislike it. It certainly looks different and interesting. I think "classic" proportioned scrolls are conservative structures when viewed from afar and need closer scrutiny to appreciate.

But the wider ears of the violin you posted certainly attract the eye. Maybe there is some middle ground to be explored.

I took the advice of Torbjorn and Conor.   38 mm works out fine ... it is just not what I usually do.   No need for extra width.

Here is what 38 mm looks roughly like ... still some scraping and small adjustments to make
