TedN Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 Does anyone know of a place to purchase a quality f hole saw? I purchased one years ago from China (because this was the only one I could find) but the quality is horrendous. I'd love to upgrade, but I'll be damned if I can find a supplier. Tried international, howard core, leumel. Can't find one anywhere.
Mike Spencer Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 look for a deep throat fret saw. any woodworkers tool supply online should have them. don't forget the blades!
Bill Yacey Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 Xacto. I ground down the back edge of their 1/4" saw blade to allow for cutting a tighter radius. I much prefer this to a coping saw. I rough cut the hole openings with the saw and finish them off with a knife and needle files.
duane88 Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/Fret-Saw-12-1-4in-Depth-p/C018004.htm?gclid=CPuHvv3C0cgCFQtrfgodmfoAoA Works well for violin, viola, cello. Mine is "Eclipse" brand, Made in England.
kwebb Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 I love my Knew Concepts saw. The blade rotates 45 or 90 degrees and it is insanely light weight. http://www.knewconcepts.com/8-inch.php

They talk about the aluminum and the titanium versions. Very cool.. Its definitely on my wish list.
yancypup Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I first bought a 12" Eclipse fret saw from Amazon and it was horrible. The clamps on the saw would not grip a blade well (they were actually painted black) and the thumbscrew stripped out on my second use. I finally got a used Sanvik on ebay that's actually decent. I was a jeweler and am used to fine quality German jewelers saws which can't be beat in my opinion. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a German saw with a 12" throat.
Melvin Goldsmith Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I can't see the point of using a saw for F holes unless one is making a bass. It only takes a few seconds to remove all the waste wood with an appropriate knife.
Conor Russell Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I use a fretsaw, but pretty quickly and crudely- I don't follow the line. I think I'd find it more difficult without it, especially through narrows at the wingtips.

MarkBouquet Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 This one's well made in Germany, and reasonably priced. http://www.rlarson.com/shop/woodworking/fretsaw-frame-wwooden-handle/

TedN Posted October 23, 2015 Author Report Posted October 23, 2015 Thanks all. A search on deep throat fret saw did the trick.
