Dwight Brown Posted June 18, 2015 Author Report Posted June 18, 2015 Mike Jones is making the neck and I guess Matt Noykos is setting the neck. Who do I send the fingerboard to? You can PM me your address. -Jim I'm not sure? You have just exceeded my speed of brain :-) If you want to send it to me I will be sure it gets to right person at the right time. DLB
Guest Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 OK guys! The wood for the plates, the neck block, and the ribs and mold went out by USPS priority mail and the folks have been sent the tracking numbers by PM. I hope I did not screw up too badly and got everything in the right box. I really tried to do it right, but my mind does not always respond to normal stimuli. DLB I received the PM Dwight and I will be out of town for a little while. -Ernie
Jim Bress Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 I'm not sure? You have just exceeded my speed of brain :-) If you want to send it to me I will be sure it gets to right person at the right time. DLB Ok, I'll send it off this week when I find a proper box for it. Considering how the last package I sent you arrived, maybe the box should be armor plated. My condolences to you and your family Ernie. -Jim
Dwight Brown Posted June 21, 2015 Author Report Posted June 21, 2015 And this just in from the front: I had to call the USPS yesterday as the neck block was shown in tracking as having arrived in San Francisco, which is just fine except it was going from Texas to Wisconsin. I was afraid it was going the long way around the world :-) Wrongway Corrigan lives! I talked to a lovely woman in customer service with a very soothing Jamaican accent. Weather our efforts yielded anything or not I do not know but the neck block has come and gone from Minneapolis so it is probably on the way to northern Wisconsin by a more normal route (I hope) The box also had the chinrest for my viola Mike is making me and it took some doing to track down a flat Flesch boxwood with Hill fittings for viola. Accourding to USPS tracking the ribs with mold have arrived, as have the wood for the plates. So we should hear pretty soon. DLB
Guest Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 Hi Dwight, I did receive the package and will get started this coming week. Would you like me to post some photo's here or will there be another building thread started to document everything? After a quick look at the form I notice that the top block is very shallow. It may need to be cut deeper into the form. I will probably use the spruce for the blocks instead of the willow. The willow growth rings are too wide IMO. I have some of this willow from John and it is the same stuff. He told me he harvested it near his home. I think it is just too warm that far south. Need to find willow in a more colder climate. The Sitka spruce from 1975 looks real good. Was this from Simeon?
Craig Tucker Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 The Sitka spruce from 1975 looks real good. Was this from Simeon? No, that's some of my old block/lining wood.
James M. Jones Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 Dang ..California? I hope they don't use it for fire wood! down the rabbit hole we go...... Jim you could send the FB directly to me so I can do some trimming and use that for shaping the neck directly . Big thanks to Dwight for masterminding the project ....happy fathers day as well.

Don't worry about the willow, recycle it into anything handy. Modify the mold in what ever way you need to so it works well for you. We already know you will have to drill holes in it and you don't need to worry about it. I'm glad the box got to you OK, thanks for all your help! DLB

DLB Ernie, Did the ribs look OK, I thought they were pretty nice but I'm not really qualified. DLB
Guest Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 Yes the ribstock is very nice. I'll have to get some from John for my viola. What did you ask him for? Does the plate maple wood match the tight flame? I also like the form a lot so I just ordered one from Cremona Tools. Are the arching templates from Cremona in paper form? What about posting photos? Here or are you going to start another thread? Makes no difference to me other than this will be a long thread. What is the longest thread ever posted on MN, I wonder.
Dwight Brown Posted June 21, 2015 Author Report Posted June 21, 2015 I think we should just post the picture here if That's OK, But maybe others have thoughts. I think the ribs match the plates pretty well. The arching templates are made from a pretty sturdy plastic of some kind, They look like they would last and last.It includes the templates for the blocks as well. I thought the ribs had really nice figure and chatoyance ( I hope I used that word correctly!) DLB
DGV Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 Posting in this thread is good since it contains all the posts on how everything got started.
Dwight Brown Posted June 21, 2015 Author Report Posted June 21, 2015 I wish I could have found a quartered one piece back to match the original instrument, but I had this stuff in my stash and I think it should do well. DLB
Dwight Brown Posted June 21, 2015 Author Report Posted June 21, 2015 Posting in this thread is good since it contains all the posts on how everything got started. That was my idea as well. I wonder if we could print out the whole thread and put it in a binder to go with the instrument. DLB

Arrgh! Dwight asked me to send it to him and so I did. The FB should arrive at Dwight's tomorrow. Dwight if the Box is undamaged I would just slap a new label on it and send it to Mike. To get the ball rolling on pictures here's my minor contribution. Happy father's Day, Jim
Dwight Brown Posted June 21, 2015 Author Report Posted June 21, 2015 No worries, I will just relay the Finger Board on it's way. I knew there would be a cetain about of mailing and re-mailing. The post office has gotten to know me pretty well. Priority mail seems to work pretty well, you get free boxes and pretty good service. It is cheaper than Fedex by quite a bit, DLB
Matthew Noykos Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 Mike Jones is making the neck and I guess Matt Noykos is setting the neck. Who do I send the fingerboard to? You can PM me your address. -Jim I'm just re-reading over the thread again and I think may have missed a few things. Did I get signed up for setting the neck?
Christopher Jacoby Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 Noykos, I'm joining plates and then arching, grad, purfling, box assembly. Set the neck and I'll buy you a glass of wine at the VSA?
Christopher Jacoby Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 And to all involved, Ernie is spot on-- lovely maple. Carpathian, light, stiff, great spruce as well. If you trust me to get it sounding good, we'll all be happy luthiers!
James M. Jones Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 Matt, No. If need be, I can do it. I am fairly comfortable doing them on my own work , It would be nice however to have someone with more experience do the work, as neck setting is the most critical and difficult joint of them all.
uncle duke Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 If you can get Christopher to mark the exact center on both plates edges at the neck block and leave enough width for back plate button it wll be a piece of cake assuming a neck angle is agreed on. I'm still the rookie show these days but I did set 6 necks a few months ago. A rather enjoyable stress free session . I will remain the casual observer- good luck to who needs it.

James M. Jones Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 the neck blank is in the house .... looks very nice , good quarter , virtually no twist , tight rings, deep flame, plenty of extra meat .
Christopher Jacoby Posted June 22, 2015 Report Posted June 22, 2015 argle, I'm just building its vital organs.
