Antonij joannes Guadagnini

Hello,

I'm looking for information about Antonij Joannes Guadagnini (working around 1750) Does anybody have information about this maker? I searched the internet but I can't find anything. Did this maker even excist? Any help will be very welcome!

I'd refer you here to Ernest Doring's book, The Guadagnini Family.  The name you've found appears to be some non-Italian misspelling and reshuffling of the name "Giovanni Antonio Guadagnini"  which was erroneously picked up by Lutgendorff based on a supposed label mentioned by Grillet as being of that maker, and dating to 1750.  Apparently no such maker ever existed.

 

There was an Antonio Guadagnini in the middle 1800's who labeled a lot of fiddles, but who was more of a dealer than a maker.

 

Do you have a fiddle with a label bearing the name you asked about?

Thanks for your reply! With this information I've searched the internet and found that this maker was mentioned in a letter by Cozio? in 1827. I indeed own a violin with a label where this name appeers on.

That Uncle Duke was made up fiction.  I just happen to be real.   What makes you think that Guadagnini I mentioned isn't real?  Ms.Emma inquired about 1750.

Your Guadagnini, Giovanni (Johannes) Baptista, is real.  Hers isn't, or at least is very poorly attested so far.  She did not report a Johannes Baptista label, but a form of the Giovanni Antonio label.  Doring dismisses that maker as being nonexistent, probably included in Lutgendorff due to a scholarly misunderstanding.  We'll know more when we see photographs.

Nice first try!   More photos would help, showing the back, sides, endpin area, and front, back, as well as the 2 sides of the scroll.

 

The label matches the only reported one for Giovanni Antonio Guadagnini.  It should be read as "Johannes Antonii Guadagnini Allevius Stradivarii fecit Taurini 1750", which is rank bad Latin for "Giovanni Antonio [wrong ending in original] Guadagnini enlightened by Stradivari made [this] in Turin 1750".  The label is very, very questionable.  We'll need the photos to figure out what your violin actually is.

violin looks pretty to me,but chinrest and tailpiece are terrible:-)
