Dwight Brown Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Does anyone have favorite reliable tone wood suppliers or no-go suppliers? Maybe: 1.Kind of Wood 2. Reliability 3. Location 4. Shipping speed 5. Stuff I forgot.... I'm Kind of working on a project of sorts. Don't worry I'm not going to put any of you out of business :-) If there is already a good thread on this or a reference thread maybe this can be an update. I looked, but I am not the best. Jim Bress Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Kenny and Denny at IVC are great to deal with. Sometimes they get one-off stuff thats not in their catalog. If you're looking for something special/specific give them a call.
James M. Jones Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Simeon Chambers has always provided me with great wood, great service and has offered a %100 percent satisfaction guarantee.
steveperry Report post Posted February 23, 2015 The most amazing and least reliable are violinmaker's widows. I still have two amazing tops left from a grab bag box I got over 10 years ago.
James Ansara Report post Posted February 23, 2015 I get maple from a man in Ontario near the ski hills. His prices are good and his wood is cut in the late 8t's and early 9t's, air dried and nice looking. I am an amateur, but I like it. I visited Metropolitan Music (also near the ski hills) and bought some spruce from Simeon Chambers. I think it is very nice. James

James Ansara Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Looks delicious. How much?Well, he has been charging me a very "friendly" price of $??cdn. per piece! I just removed the price, it's very low. He is retired but is still a violin maker. James
Renée Report post Posted February 24, 2015 Kenny and Denny at IVC are great to deal with. Sometimes they get one-off stuff thats not in their catalog. If you're looking for something special/specific give them a call. Do you have a link for them, or an expansion of the letters "IVC"? Google gives me all kinds of non-wood related links ... I can add one point of anecdata with oldworldtonewood - 4 yr old wood, reasonably priced, and one from a retired luthier - 30 year old wood - not so cheap. Chris Llana Report post Posted February 24, 2015 Sitka spruce tops from Alaska Specialty Woods (http://www.alaskawoods.com/). Click on "Carved Top" from the product list to see six violin top offerings. Inexpensive. I bought five tops but haven't used them yet.

Sorry Renee, that's what I get for assuming. IVC stands for International Violin Company (https://www.internationalviolin.com/) in Baltimore. -Jim

jezzupe Report post Posted February 24, 2015 For those seeking alternate species, and heck even maple and spruce on occasion, its hard to beat Gilmer woods selection and quality of some of their stuff, prices are reasonable as well... https://www.gilmerwood.com/ I can spend hours at this site
Mike Spencer Report post Posted February 24, 2015 Does anyone know if Battenkill Tonewoods is still in the game? Joe I bought some wood from Robert Crosby last summer and at that time he mentioned that he was getting out of the business and that his supply was getting fairly limited. Too bad as he supplied me with some nice wood.
Julian Cossmann Cooke Report post Posted February 25, 2015 Rick Miller, a maker here in Salt Lake, has pretty much moved on from the business and may have some wood left. I thought his prices for big leaf maple cello backs were reasonable. Also Cynthia Davis in Oakland, same story though I bought tools from her rather than wood. PM me if you would like contact info for either, Dwight.

JacksonMaberry Report post Posted December 26, 2015 I'm brand new and can't post images, but once I can I'll show pictures of what John Tepper in southern Oregon calls a AAA set. Very beautiful stuff to my novice eye. I'm a rank beginner but I thought it might be interesting and relevant to those seeking tonewoods in the PAC NW.
