Stephen Faulk Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 There are several words, phrases and terms in instrument making that bother me. I don't know why, it's probably mostly irrational, but it makes me completely pissy to hear them or read them. The fIrst one and the one I absolutely loathe is when someone says: "That model is a good build." Or "My build is coming along well." I hate it when say people that, using build that way. It makes me so furious I get red in the face and my brain stops working so much so that I can't even think about which part of grammar it is and how messed up it is. Although I am assured by certified grammarians that is is proper to use build that way. ARRGGGGGG! We hates it. Second- Garland, I hate the word garland when applied to violin rib assemblies. It makes me crazy like I want to close my ears. What the hell! Is this freaking wreath on your door or Judy Garland? NOOOOOO. NOOOOO. It is violin ribs. We hates garland applied to violin rib assemblies. Third- del Gesu pronunciations. Fine call it what ever you want, just don't correct others about it. Don't act all high mighty and think your Italian does not stink because you say smooth Del Yaaahh suuuuu and not a hard G sound as in del Jaysuuu Tomatoes Potatoes, don't think you're hot shiet because you correct others about Del Potatoes and Del Tomatos. Get over yourself. Forth Eetalian and EyeTalian - For the love of God Edith! It's EEE talian with a soft I. Not EYE talian with a hard I. Only Archie Bunker says it that way. Fifth Gramil is not so bad, but its useless word. I don't like the sound of it. So don't say it in front of me. Sixth Using latin names for wood in instances and situations when the common name will do just fine. Just stop, cease and desist. "Ever eat a Pine tree? Many parts are edible." See Euell Gibbons could eat a damn tree without telling you it's damn latin name. I suggest you do the same. That is, eat a pine tree to keep your mouth full. Seventh I'm thinking on it...........something will piss me off soon enough. Thank for allowing me to come forth with my neurosis and vent to my peers. It is so much better cheaper than therapy. Good evening. Hold the phone...#7 Corpus, I hate the word 'corpus' it just sounds murderous, just say 'body', it wont kill you to say 'violin body'.
Rue Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Latin names are important. Start using them even when you don't have to. Now...what were we drinking?
Stephen Faulk Posted February 9, 2015 Author Report Posted February 9, 2015 So says the bug lady. Those six legged things you study, those are 'Bugs' and the bugs with more legs, those are bugs with lots of legs. The large ones are Big Bugs the tiny teensy ones are widdle bugs.

I'm here because I find the people here to be really interesting and intelligent. And because there's no pub in my little town. We've gotta find out where he lives and pass the hat to get a pub built there................
Stephen Faulk Posted February 9, 2015 Author Report Posted February 9, 2015 Scientists..HA you all think yer so smart.
Rue Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Crowd funding for Stephen's Super Sake Bar?
Violadamore Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Crowd funding for Stephen's Super Sake Bar? Yup. Make it something like Rick's in Casablanca where any gaijin expats in the area can congregate and vent. For reasons I won't explain here, call it "Chez Max Danger".
Stephen Faulk Posted February 9, 2015 Author Report Posted February 9, 2015 I'm the only gaigin for miles around so I have to entertain myself. See Japan is great in many ways, but the actual western style pub scarcity is really messed up. If that is what is comfortable to you it is hard to find here and probably only exists in big cities. The thing here are bars with door covers and hostesses in funny outfits that chat you up, or karaoke places. Both places make me completely homicidal. So I never go out at night. There's no place I can hang out and talk to Japanese people unless I spend a lot of money or put up with lot of extra noise. And I had a root canal done this morning and am annoyed. There's not even a coffee shop type place her where people hang out, it derive me completely nuts. It's totally dead here. I'm used to Latin countries where even small towns have a town square and you can amuse yourself watching all the town characters, but small towns in Japan are not centralized in that way so it's discombobulating. You can't even imagine how strange it is for me. Everyday I walk out the door I feel like I'm on acid.
HullGuitars Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 this thread reminds me of the scene when the lorax tries to kill that fat lady.
CarloBartolini Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 And I had a root canal done this morning and am annoyed. Ha!!! Dél Djeysù, Dél Djeysu Dél Djeysu!!!!!!! Guadanhi, Guadanhi Guadanhi!!!!!!!!
Don Noon Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Vieuxtemps Zygmuntowicz Why can't we outlaw long, hard-to pronounce names that are spelled nothing like how they are supposed to be pronounced? (just think how much easier life would be if "Noon" was the maker that everyone talked about)
DGV Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Vieuxtemps and Zygmuntowicz are easy to pronounce if you know a bit of French and Polish. Try to pronounce Csíkszentmihályi.
Bob Sp Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 Vieuxtemps and Zygmuntowicz are easy to pronounce if you know a bit of French and Polish. Try to pronounce Csíkszentmihályi. As Mihaly suggests - just go with the flow... Egészségedre !

(just think how much easier life would be if "Noon" was the maker that everyone talked about) Speaking of which, Mr. Noon, Congratulations!!! Just received my Strings Mag, and there you is: Winner of steel string violin award (and you did say last year you were going to use louder strings?) from AZ. I recognized you. OK, they also identified you. I suspect there were some other Maestronetters there, but I am still learning who everyone is. Point is, at least some people are talking about Noon!

(just think how much easier life would be if "Noon" was the maker that everyone talked about) For certain words with more than three consonants in a row should be banned. And this abomination: Francois Tourte! What is a Franko-is Toor-teah anyway?
MikeC Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 What the heck is a gramil ? Some phrases should be outlawed. such as... 'at the end of the day' this thread is 'ill fated'
Jim Bress Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 "We hates it." Stephen, great morning chuckle as I read your post using Sméagol's voice. I was a bit disapppointed when half way through your rant you went out of character. I will usually be guilty of adding the latin names of plants and critters because common names often mean different things depending on where you live. And bugs, we hates it when people refer to all arthropods as bugs! I've been drinking winter boks lately. A lot of the local pubs brew ther own. I'll drink the next one for you. Cheers, Jim
Dwight Brown Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 If I hear one more person say "He gifted it to me." I'm gonna have a melt down. I was raised by an English teacher.........scarey. Please god say "He gave it to me." Flame off. :-) DLB

I was raised by an English teacher.........scarey. Please god say "He gave it to me." Flame off. :-) DLB Thank you we hATES IT HATES IT! We hates gifted it to me. He STOLE IT! Nasty burglar. And I have had enough of this: "Why don't you reach out to so and so...." ...it sounds so lame. Or I reached out to..blah blah. Can't stand hearing that. How about: "I asked George for help with the charity drive." Rather than: "I reached out to George for help. " as if you are drowning right? Stop reaching out to me, just ask for what you need or want. Good lord.
not telling Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 This reminds me. I have heard real guys use the term "tiger stripes". No. It's flame, or gtfo.

(just think how much easier life would be if "Noon" was the maker that everyone talked about) I think the root cause of the problem is that the English speaking world never adopted Mark Twain's excellent proposal regarding spelling and pronunciation ... think about how easy it would be now ! http://www.i18nguy.com/twain.html
Jimbow Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 This is good place for venting frustrations! Better than taking it out on good wood !
CarloBartolini Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 OK, I'll vent too!!! We hates the word "Ni"! And we hates when someone says "Vernice Bianca" as if it was one specific recipe - ergh - it means varnish without color, yes for hundres of years before Sacconi....NI, Ni, Ni!! . . . Dèll Djeiysùuu gifted to Guadagni a Zymungtonwichinskys violin....Ni..Ni!!!
