I like Tanguy too. I also like along the same lines Gorky and Matta and Ernst and Wilfredo Lam. Although Gorky is my favorite of all of them. Jean Arp is quite lovely too. He made sweet little painted shapes that seem really simple but have a mojo that s hard to imitate.

Arp's graphic work is a bit simplistic for me, his three dimensional  objects were his strongest suit.

I managed to open that film. Probably no more copyright. It was fantastic and it made my morning thanks.

I often find myself singing

"Take me to the lost dogs' home, bow-wow!

And lead me by a collar and a chain, bow-wow!

I'm sad, bad, furious and mad;

Oh, hold me back, I've got an attack

Of bow-wow on the brain!"

... whilst doing the washing up.  But I can’t find a recording of it anywhere.   :(

P.S. I hope my cigar smoke didn’t bother you.

Ok, sorry, my computer went nuts...

For many years I watched but did not really understand the point or the drive behind modern abstractivsm, or much primitive simplistic art...

But slowly, such works wove their way in, and now I look with wonder at much of such art - and wonder how I was ever too busy with life to stop and look.

Keep posting such things, ok?

Craig, first of all, I hope you didn’t mind sending Tanguy’s silly photos in my earlier post. He was known as a big prankster.

Surrealism isn’t so high on my TOP 10 list, but Tanguy is OK for me. After all he painted famous “MOMA, DADA is wounded” painting.

Unlike surrealists idiosyncratic exclusive world, Klee’s style includes expressionism, cubism, futurism and surrealism, it is mystical, abstract and even “primitive” (in a sense ‘naïve’), but first of all his style is highly individual, always complex and meaningful.

You could call his art “primitive”, but this is definitely the most highly sophisticated primitivism.

Here is how the Great Champ du Champ comments Klee:

"The first reaction in front of a Klee painting is the very pleasant discovery, what everyone of us could or could have done, to try drawing like in our childhood. Most of his compositions show at the first glance a plain, naive expression, found in children's drawings. […] At a second analyse one can discover a technique, which takes as a basis a large maturity in thinking. A deep understanding of dealing with watercolors to paint a personal method in oil, structured in decorative shapes, let Klee stand out in the contemporary art and make him incomparable. On the other side, his experiment was adopted in the last 30 years by many other artists as a basis for newer creations in the most different areas in painting. His extreme productivity never shows evidence of repetition, as is usually the case. He had so much to say, that a Klee never became an other Klee."

There is so much to discover in his art.

And last but not the least, Klee was (from 1921 to 1931) Professor on Bauhaus.

BOW-WOW

You might as well bring Kandinsky into the conversation now.

In my opinion, the surrealists idiosyncratic world, was simply a mirror of virtually all art movements, then, now, whenever.

Any self-imagined grandeur was just that.

... the output of most all art "movements", including the surrealists, (but not at all singling them out for any kind of outstanding pat -on-the-back-ism) is still usually great, when any of the top artists are considered...

It's much like violin making in this respect.
