MarkBouquet Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 A major print catalog and internet stringed instrument reseller says on their website that, due to high demand overwhelming the manufacturer's production capacity, these US$985.00 shoulder rests are out of stock until March. http://www.pirastro.com/public_pirastro/pages/en/Pirastro-KorfkerCradle-00001/ $985.00 for a shoulder rest? (!) Has anyone here experienced these? Are they that good? (I personally don't use a shoulder rest, so there's probably not one of these in my future anytime soon, or even anytime soon thereafter.) It seems that money just ain't what it used to be, at least not in the violin world.
vathek Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Wait a few years and maybe the price will come down.
Rue Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Or maybe they discovered the holy grail of shoulder rests! Someone buy one and report back to us!
DGV Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Well, if people can afford $120-a-piece violin pegs, they can certainly afford a shoulder rest under $1000.
Rue Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 So...for those who can't afford or get an actual Strad...they can pimp their current violin so it costs almost as much?
Will L Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 I wish I had predicted this sort of thing publicly years ago so that I would look like the "seer" I am. What I actually said was that they will keep finding ways of making the violin MORE secure, until they simply put a pointed stake on a shoulder pad and drive it through the players neck. But the idea of continually more clever shoulder rests is alive and well, apparently. Now if it also caught mice and included a secret decoding device, it might be worth half that. MO
Kallie Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 This shoulder rest would look so great on my Stradivarius, next to me on the seat as I drive my Lamborghini on the way to performing at Carnegie Hall. Oh wait....
Muswell Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 A logical conclusion of consumerism. When I started playing we had little pillows which our mothers made, but one of the teachers had a shoulder rest...wow! Between then and now 99% of the population seem to have been convinced that they have to buy a shoulder rest, then another when they get dissatisfied with that one and so it goes on.

No, the end of that trail is a heavy adjustable tripod mount with a music support and a seat for your page turner
Rue Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Hey! I saw one of those for sale at Cabelas!
Muswell Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 This shoulder rest would look so great on my Stradivarius, next to me on the seat as I drive my Lamborghini on the way to performing at Carnegie Hall. Oh wait.... Don't you have a chauffeur?
Kallie Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Don't you have a chauffeur? He couldn't be trusted.. Had to let him go.
Muswell Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 No, the end of that trail is a heavy adjustable tripod mount with a music support and a seat for your page turner Try this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionisio_Aguado_y_Garc%C3%ADa
Muswell Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 He couldn't be trusted.. Had to let him go. Yes given half a chance they borrow the Strad for hillbilly music and it comes back with cigarette burns.
DGV Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 These days, in addition to a $980+ shoulder rest, you need a titanium music stand with shock absorbing legs and built-in reading lights AND an iPad with the AirTurn pedal. Also, a $50 rosin cake and a $2000 space-age material case don''t hurt.
Violadamore Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Try this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionisio_Aguado_y_Garc%C3%ADa " In the Escuela Aguado describes .........his invention of a "tripodion": a device that held the guitar and thus minimized the damping effect of the player's body on the guitar's back and sides". OMG, life mimics satire again .
Will L Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Yeah, wait 'til Cabela's CEO's daughter starts taking violin. THEN we'll see something! Probably 20,000 square feet department right next to the archery section.
Peter Lynch Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Pirastro also just came out with a shoulder rest (without cradle) version of this. I don't use a shoulder rest, but I tried the Pirastro and it was surprisingly unobtrusive and comfortable for me. Any other shoulder rest I have tried gets in the way and feels cumbersome somehow. Hard to explain, but something was very different about the geometry of the thing.

Peter Lynch Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 $139 at Shar.. http://www.sharmusic.com/shop.axd/Search?keywords=Pirastro#keywords=Pirastro&page_no=1&src=&_=1421095295419&page_length=500
Will L Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 I have sought advice from W. E. Coyote, who has taken an interest in a better shoulder pad. He has asked a major manufacturer to add a net and pogo stick; I can't imagine what for! Should be out before the hot Arizona summer. From Wikipedia: Acme Corporation[edit] Main article: Acme Corporation Wile E. Coyote often obtains complex and ludicrous devices from a mail-order company, the fictitious Acme Corporation, which he hopes will help him catch the Road Runner.
vathek Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Where I live that would also include approx. $60 in state tax, which tax will not go to fix the roads.
Kallie Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Where I live that would also include approx. $60 in state tax, which tax will not go to fix the roads. I know the feeling. I pay about $80 import tax on broken German trade violins that I buy on eBay. They even charged me $40 on $25 varnish once....
Rue Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 I don't understand S&H fees...I see the same object being sent for $10 from China and for $60 from the US. Either the post office charges very different fees or someone is making a killing on the Handling part of it...
richardz Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 Also: not mentioned...this shoulder rest looks like it would need it's own case to transport it. Annoying additional duty for your personal assistant.
