Happy Christmas

Roger Hargrave

Recommended Posts

Normally I hate Christmas and all it stands for in the modern world. But this year, possibly because I now have three new grandchildren, I feel at least like saying happy holidays to everyone. The ancients had it right with this festival. Only a few more days and the sun will start to return. My old bones have already had enough of the chilling winds that are blasting across this area of the North German coast. So:

Kisses (no tongues) to everyone on MN and may I wish you all at least a few, 'Happy Holidays'

Happy holidays to you Roger. From sunny New Mexico.

Truth be told?

Simply being alive, for me, is a good reason to celebrate. I love it, every morning I wake up next to my beautiful wife, and there you are, another extraordinary day!

My wife loves Christmas, and decorates the houses exterior, (well, she direct's me on the ladder to!) and the inside of the house with christmas EVERYTHING - including a small (plastic) tree, Nativities handed down from her mother, and mine... and all the rest.

She has a solid holiday tradition handed down to her, from her parents, and she comes from a strong Hispanic (American Indian actually) Catholic background, as I come from a traditional Irish Catholic background.

All eight of my grandkids are "holiday excited"... as kids should be. What a cool time of year, huh?

Truth be told, I am out of the "holiday spirit" myself, and no longer have much interest in these types of things... They simply no longer attract me nor do the myriad of "stories" behind the holiday activities move me to any 'altered state', never mind being excited or whatever by them...

Why?

Who knows - this was the case for some years before my recent stroke - so, I cannot blame that life altering event, it simply has left me (the holiday "spirit", that is). But even though I don't even pretend to have this "spirit" any longer, I am very happy to engage in the gift buying, decorating, and all the rest - so, I have not become the Holiday Grouch - or the Christmas Grinch either...

Yes Happy holiday to you and everyone else here.

Celebrate! Life is short! Count your blessings!

Craig, funny you should say that, but I don't get excited by one day, or season over another anymore either.  I like buying stuff for the family, giving food and gifts to the local church charity, and getting a few new violin tools; but alas there is really no excitement.  Excitement for me is just living, and doing what I do.  Last Christmas we spent 4 days at a Holiday Inn Express, because an ice storm knocked out the power.  We came back and had dinner with our son who came over from Chicago a couple days later.  It was OK with me. The grandsons are in Arizona (I love hot weather, why do I live in Michigan), so we miss out on that.  But kids today get so much stuff....I thought my neice and nephew got a lot of stuff back 37 years ago, now it is even worse.   It is the people that make life worth it, not the stuff.  We had the grandkids up here in June, that was more like the feeling of Christmas.  It was exciting to go to the VSA in Indy.   Something different.

That said, at least holidays give an excuse for families to get together, and enjoy each others company.  That is the best part.  Roger knows what puts him in good spirits; the people.

Merry Christmas to all,

Ken

Dashing through the snow,

With a nappy in one hand,

Baby wipes galore,

Who cares where they land?

Oh! Hells Bells,

Grandson smells,

Like he laid an egg!

Get another nappy,

It’s running down his leg!

Well, looks like Addie's already into the spirit of the season. ;)   Brilliantly icky, BTW.  Wishing everyone an Introspective Advent and a Very Merry Christmas  :) .  More later.
