I went to the concert last night with my mom. It was great. Nice little theater and Amit Peled was a very good performer and entertainer. He played a concert that Casals played 100 years ago with the addition of two modern pieces. He took a few breaks during the concert to talk to and field questions from the audience. He was quite charming and funny and had some very interesting things to say. I recommend seeing him live if you get the chance. Casals' widow was absent since her dog was sick. Mr. Peled revealed that after her death, the cello will go to a museum in Spain behind glass.

I called ahead citing a maestronet credential :) asking if I could take some photos of Mr. Peled and the cello and I got the green light. So after the performance I waited for Mr. Peled's fans and friends to clear out and approached to congratulated him and ask about photos. He was expecting me and was very gracious, polite, and interesting. I was invited into the greenroom where we hung out for a little bit and discussed the cello, performance, etc.

I've got to run to take my little girl to music class so I'll quickly post these here in high resolution and will check back in later. It was a great concert and cultural experience. Here are some photos of Mr. Amit Peled and the newly renovated Casals Cello, exclusive to MN from last night.

Neat!

Thank you BC...for taking those photos and posting them...and thank you, Amit Peled, for posing so nicely with your beautiful cello! :)

Thanks guys and to Roger for alerting me to this cello/concert.

Amit was very humorous and well spoken. I hope to have the opportunity in the coming years to watch him perform a big concerto live.

It was also, obviously, a treat to watching him bring his voice out through Pablo's cello.

Interestingly, for a long time the 'experts' thought this cello was by Bergonzi, until they decided he hadn't made any, at which time it became a Gofriller.  Makes me wonder what it'll be next.

I'm disappointed Madame Casals has decided to donate the cello  to a museum.  There are few enough of them to go around, and it'll just raise the price on the remainder.  Her husband was a fine musician and a conscionable humanitarian, just not the 'Second Coming.'   If she wanted to follow in her husband's elevated footsteps she could donate it to a fine music school in perpetuity.  That way it might be used to help promote the career of some young but deserving artist.

thanks for posting, interesting that the maker was in dispute, who finally determined that it is a gofriller? I'm not sure if the Spanish museum bequest was part of Pablo's will or his wife's.

The last 'expert' who looked at it.  But more seriously, I suppose, like most other things, the ability to accurately attribute antique instruments has greatly improved in the last 100 years.  I was under the impression the instrument was long thought to be a Bergonzi before new information presumably made possible a more expert opinion.  Or as a luthier once told me, "The instrument is whatever Moennig says it is!"
