How did you learn - what got you started?

I always liked music, mostly early 60's stuff on AM radio. Then I heard two different kinds of REAL music. I heard  Led Zeppelin 1 on a stereo and never went back to AM, and I went to the Detroit Symphony as a field trip for the band (played clarinet) and couldn't believe the sound.  I tuned the radio on in my room and listened to the rebroadcast a few days later.  Still today, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, or Prokofiev, Beethoven, Stravinsky  and other songs will play in my head; no stereo required.

I grew older, the family was growing up, and out of the blue I started thinking about making instruments.  Thought I'd make a clarinet, and learned all the acoustics from a book by Benade, Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics.  Had a programable calculator and figured out where and how big the bore perturbs had to be, and then didn't realize how hard it would be to actually do it!

So I thought of guitars, but found there were a lot of people doing them.  Bought a book on making stringed instruments by George Buchanan, and the violins and violas looked like more fun, although the archtop, and mandolins looked cool too.  So I started making violins.  I figured NOBODY makes them. Hah.

Now 10 years and 7 instruments later (plus the 4 I have started) I think I might have some idea what I am doing.  I'm going to be 59 this year, so soon I will enter into stage 3 of the disease.  There is no cure.

Started playing the piano back in 2000, but I take it seriously until I joined a voice competition in 2003. I would start reading the piano obbligato to "Caro mio ben" and "Panis Angelicus" (both with at least three flats. That was too daunting for a beginner) and accompany myself. Since then I started teaching myself the piano and have reached a fairly advanced level ever since.

That's when I also decided to learn the violin. Spent about a hundred bucks to buy myself a new 4/4 violin and started teaching myself using Suzuki Book 1 thereafter.

Never got past "Twinkle, twinkle little star". LOL.
