Violin question

Recommended Posts

Hi, Ive been looking at this violin. Can someone perhaps give any info on origin, etc? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Riccardo-Antoniazzi-Milano-1897-Old-Italian-Labeled-Violin-Full-Size-/261405059445?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cdcf4a975

Im getting the idea it could be revarnished? The varnish seems to have alot of wear, but no scratches. Which leads me to think it was either touched up, or the varnish was redone and antiqued. Under the chinrest (where it should be), the wear and lack of varnish seems too neat/perfect. (I could be totally wrong here, though)

Thank You.

The “usual” tarted up Saxon box. Never trust labels that look like someone has sprinkeled dust on through a sieve

Thank you very much. Do you think it is revarnished?

Yes, 100ish years old. Not the cheapest Saxon box, but nothing special. Some dimwit seems to have broken the scroll off and had it repaired at the charity shop. Chin-rest wear on any 100 year old violin from anywhere is always fake, because they had chin-rests by that time (= no natural wear at all). I have even seen “Chin-rest wear” on Celli
