Sam Z violin for sale

Dylana Jenson is selling her 1994 Sam Z. violin for $149,000. Is listing it on a violin forum an odd approach to selling a violin at this price range? Kinda like using Kijiji?

Or maybe this is the way to go? I have no clue (apparently)..

I don't know who's Dylana Jenson but I don't see anything wrong with trying to sell the violin "on a forum".

Maybe the violin has a fabulous tone. Or plays in tune. Whatever. I am quite sure for her it's worth every

cent of those $149k.

I've played her violin couple years back, it does sound really good. I wouldnt buy for 150k....

If the instrument is the one shown on her website http://www.dylanajenson.com/events/, it isn't a special bench copy or anything, just his personal model with the clipped corners on the lower wings.

 

Perhaps she considers herself to be notable, and the used instruments of notable musicians can sell for more (?)

Dylana Jenson is quite a noted concert violinist, a famous child prodigy (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylana_Jenson for details).  She made acclaimed recordings of the Sibelius concerto with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in the early 1980s.  She's a good example of why there can be trouble with the loaning of instruments to performers.  Jensen made her famous recordings and early concert performances playing on a 1743 Guarneri del Gesu violin that was loaned to her.  When she announced that she was going to get married the owner of the instrument took it back on short notice because he felt she couldn't be serious about her career if she was going to marry.  After playing on different instruments she acquired a Zygmuntowicz violin in 1995 which she used in concerts and found excellent.  I suppose that's the instrument she is selling

Don, it is surely a fabulous violin. I think Zyg made a violin which was highly praised by Isaac Stern. That should tell a lot : Stern was a man of spotless integrity.

Also, IMHO, a violin used by an artist of Mrs. Jenson's caliber does indeed increase in value quite a bit.

old guy story time...

Back in the dark ages when I was a woodchuck, I cut some guitar wood for Bob Benedetto.  Fast forward a decade plus... I am in a guitar shop in Cleveland with one of my sons and there in the humidity controlled room for the acoustic guitars is a glass case enshrining a Benedetto arch-top from the early 1980's.  Price: $23,000.  So I can't resist....I call Bob and tell him.  He laughs and says he probably sold that guitar for 800 bucks...and then adds "If I were smart, every time I made a guitar, I should have made 2..and stuck one in the closet...who knew?"

I think quite the opposite. Maybe they'll need some time to settle into more realistic prices and then they'll take off from there.

The only question is what could be a realistic price ?

Glad you posted this.  Maybe one has to be of a certain age to know who Dylana Jenson is.  That sudden withdrawl of the del Gesu shows one good reason for a performer not to get a fiddle on loan, even a fancy Italian.  Better to get a contemporary instrument you can pay for and actually own.

I'm pretty sure that is the Zygmuntowicz violin for sale. I did my undergrad at the school Ms Jensen taught at. She looks about the age that she would have been when she was on that violin.

Says here that the violin made for Stern in 1994 sold for $130K at Tarisio in 2003. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Zygmuntowicz , so the price isn't outrageous.  Given the reviews of Dylana playing hers however, one wonders why she is selling it, and hopes the reasons are only happy ones.
