pjham Report post Posted December 30, 2013 I'm still trying to learn basic violin ID from photos. Would I be correct or not if I thought the following two violins were Chinese from the same maker? Thanks. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-1928-French-viola-by-Apparut-16-/191011659974?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=A%252F7JsVDW3EXMjd0ly%252BFgJpyB5DY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271354548673?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
duane88 Report post Posted December 30, 2013 Perhaps not the same maker, but quite possibly the same varnisher and antiquer.
hendrik Report post Posted December 31, 2013 Varnish - antiquing looks a lot like some violins i saw a few years ago that were said to be new workshop Hungarian. Sounded quite nice. By the same token could have been Chinese and varnished/ set-up in Hungary.

The label also has similarities to the other two.
Violadamore Report post Posted December 31, 2013 These all seem to be coming from the Dallas,Texas area, most likely same person.
Ratcliffiddles Report post Posted December 31, 2013 Yes they are all Chinese, with shockingly bad varnishing, probably imported white before being "finished".
Conor Russell Report post Posted December 31, 2013 Amazing. Then this guy hasn't twigged that he could buy perfectly legit Chinese instruments, even from a middle man, and still make a better profit than he's making, without ripping anyone off. Jeffrey Holmes Report post Posted December 31, 2013 The varnish looks a little bit like the "Rudolph Doetsch" instruments used to look. Way back when, those were Höfner bodies, then the supply switched to China/Eastman. Haven't seen one for ages, though.
