Information about maker Ivan Zgradic California

Recommended Posts

Hello,  I am a cellist in Australia trying to find the cello of my dreams (no easy task in this part of the world!).    Can anyone help me out with information about this maker?   I have just come across a cello dated from 1981 by this maker.  It is very hard to get information about the overseas makers here in Australia, and what they should be worth…...

Try Googling his name.  Among other things you'll find that his instruments have been sold through Metzler's http://www.metzlerviolins.com/default.aspx     http://articles.latimes.com/1993-05-18/business/fi-36703_1_violin-shop

He seems to have originally come from Istanbul by way of Rome and worked in Studio City, California for a number of years.

I hope this helps :)  I'd take note of the prices given.................and get it authenticated.

Have you tried contacting any Australian makers? I realise that Holden will soon be going the way of the dodo, but we are still making cellos here.

Hello Austcello - I realize that your original post is from some years ago, but as the son of Ivan Zgradic here in Los Angeles, I figured I would post a reply.  My father passed away a couple of years ago, sadly.  However there are still a few of his instruments available through Metzler in Glendale, California.  I also have some of his hand made instruments available as well.

If you have any questions or interest, I'd be glad to chat.

I'm sorry about your dad.

This is a very rare opportunity. Even if you have found another cello by now, I would highly recommend that you go learn as much information from this makers heir as possible.

Actually, there’s no reason not To request an in-depth bio to be posted here on a permanent basis. Knowledge never goes out of style.
