FredPotter
I have an old violin. The label which is difficult to see, reads "Alessandro Gagliano alomnus Stradivarius fecit 1720 Napoli". What sort of properties should I look for to determine its authenticity? I gather lots of copies were made in the 19th century Thanks Fred
redbrown
Hi Fred, thanks for your post. Your question is really a difficult one but the best thing you can do if possible is to upload a few straight on photos of the front of the fiddle as well the back. Also, the side of the scroll and pegbox is important all being in focus. Some of the very fine experts here at Maesrtonet can try to help you if they can see clear straight on photo's of your old violin. Since this is your first post, I'm not sure if you can upload photo's directly to MN yet. So....you could sign up to a site like www.photobucket.com where you can upload your nice photo's and then post a link here. Good Luck Fred. Roger Hargrave
If you can find it, I wrote an article about him on my web site. Unfortunately it is not up to date, since it was written in the 1980's, but there are some good pointers. ,
