C_Johnson
Chalk one up for Anne akiko Meyers. Though Ben chan on YouTube holds a special place in my heart as well, and I think he has huge potential as he grows older. He is already one of the best I've heard. C_Johnson
I'd like to add that my favorite I've ever HEARD though, is Jascha Heifetz. Favorite I've never heard is Paganini.
Omobono
Don't have a favorite but it's refreshing to talk and hear about living and performing artists.
Todd2
Itzhak Perlman. I also like Roman Kim. He is doing compositions which are very nice.

AtlVcl
...is it just me...or is that an unfortunate wardrobe choice for a seated performance? It's certainly an unfortunate wardrobe choice for women, but maybe a prime example of "violin porn." BTW, played Paganini last week with Augustin Hadelich; a very fine technician (as they all seem to be these days...), an unfortunate confection of a concerto. I'd have much preferred Stravinsky, as a previous poster noted.
not telling
It's certainly an unfortunate wardrobe choice for women, but maybe a prime example of "violin porn." BTW, played Paganini last week with Augustin Hadelich; a very fine technician (as they all seem to be these days...), an unfortunate confection of a concerto. I'd have much preferred Stravinsky, as a previous poster noted. ...unfortunate wardrobe choice? ? That's not what they were saying in the first row. Many patrons of the arts were able to stay awake through that performance in anticipation of her next move. And may it be a grand, sweeping gesture, they so fervently hoped. To me though, violin porn refers to extreme close-ups of the violin itself. Players are great...so many of them. And lots of the successful women are also beautiful. They can do whatever, and I'll still be focused on what the instrument is doing. Though I could go on and on about my favorite instruments, I hate to name names of my favorite performers. They are all great...though like you say...often players exhibit technical perfection alone.
AtlVcl
Whatever was being said in the first row pro'ly depends on the individual. Personally, I find it in poor taste, bordering on the offensive, but then she's playing a concert, and not trying to win a fashion contest. (quite obviously!)
Violadamore
...is it just me...or is that an unfortunate wardrobe choice for a seated performance? Why do I hear the theme from I Dream Of Jeannie?
BassClef
Kavakos, and it's not even close. I've seen many mentioned on here live and within the past few years, Kavakos live is on another level entirely.
yulaberry
Voting for Perlman, too. He just kind of has a je ne sais quoi musicality that's so appealing and enjoyable to listen to, over and over again.
muzioabelardo
It's a toss up between Tianwa Yang and Joshua Bell, although Hilary Hahn is also a top choice.
ludwigbartholdy
Joshua Bell will always be my top choice, although I feel confining it to only one choice, as there are other amazing modern violinists who may as well belong in the upper echelon of "great violinists of all time." Muzio - Interesting how you mention Tianwa Yang. I've been following her career since the day I saw her play Paganini's caprices with ridiculous musical maturity at the age of what, 11? 12? I wish she'd stop playing Sarasate in her most recent Naxos releases, though. I don't think those musically empty showpieces are doing any justice to her amazing talent.
