Thomas Coleman Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Hello all, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a list of the decorated or embellished Stradivarius instruments. Or, if the list is that small, maybe you could list them here? I know of the "Hellier" and the "Rodes". What else is there? Thanks for your time.

Bruce Carlson Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 According to Pollens, page 270: Sunrise-1677 Hellier-1679 Cipriani-Potter-1683 Ole Bull-1687 King of Spain, cello-1694 Axelrod, viola-1695 King of Spain, viola-1696; violin I-1709; violinII-1709 Greffuhle-1709(date altered) Rode-1722 The remains of a violin, only the belly, for another decorated violin datable from c.1685-1688 that was on exhibition in Cremona in 2011. It was once owned by the Hills for many years.
Torbjörn Zethelius Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 The only decorated Strad cello was once plain. It was 'dressed up' by Rene Morel, based on Stradivari's remaining paper stencils. It seems to me that the decorations on the ribs weren't for a cello of that size, but for a smaller instrument. King of Spain, cello-1694
Thomas Coleman Posted October 7, 2013 Author Report Posted October 7, 2013 Thanks for the replies! It is my understanding that the Rodes is painted. Does anyone know about the others? Inlay, I know, but with what? Mastic and lampblack would be my guess but.....I don't think it would have been ebony. I wonder if the inlay was done intartia style or not.
skiingfiddler Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Per "Notes" cited at cozio.com, a Strad cello in Madrid's Prado Museum is the only known Strad cello that was decorated by Stradivari. A "decorated" Stradivari cello which was not decorated by Stradivari but decorated in the 20th century so that Herbert Axelrod would have a full quartet of decorated Strads is the Marylebone at the Smithsonian (at least that's where it was in 1999): http://www.cozio.com/Instrument.aspx?id=1432
duane88 Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Don't forget the decorated top that is in the possession of the Charles Beare, from the Hill family. Also the Axelrod viola is mostly, if not completely, spurious.
