Took the Plunge - First eBay violin - toughts?

This is a brilliant thread!  So many people have added loads of interesting stuff - makes for excellent bedtime reading.

I have to say - having looked at the photos, and to the YouTube video of the bloke playing it - I would have also happily paid $350 for it.  I rather like the dark colour, and while it lacks the dark sound that I prefer, it seems to play quite well with a decent enough sound.  That's a pretty small amount of money for a rather cool looking violin.

I rather hope your 1 year old child doesn't completely destroy the instrument - that'd be quite a shame, as I've never seen one quite like this before.

Thanks for your nice comments. Keep reading, the violin ends up falling off of its precarious perch atop my bookcase, it now sits in a sad case with a broken neck/head. I even scavenged one of its fine tuners. If someone on here reading wants to repair it, PM me, I can let it go for cheap! And thanks for asking, my daughter is now 2.5 and she is starting cello lessons (her choice). Today is her first official lesson (the first was a trial to see if she was ready). Too bad there's not a flourishing eBay trade of 100+ year old fractional cellos with an association to Vienna, I'd have another way to drive my wife Lucitano crazy.

So do I congratulate you on your budding cellist...

...of offer 'not gonna be a violinist' condolences? :D

I didn't know you were married to Lucitano...

The first one, definitely the first! I'm not sure if Lucitano is wifey material, I've only seen a photo of half of his face.

For your consideration, a Monkey-Headed "Dallinger":

alte Geige Zettel Sebastian Dalinger Wien Vienna Barock Violine Löwenkopfgeige

http://www.ebay.de/itm/alte-Geige-Zettel-Sebastian-Dalinger-Wien-Vienna-Barock-Violine-Lowenkopfgeige-/111665098514?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item19ffc22f12

Nice to hear from you again, BC (you had some holidays from MN?)!

Here we have a nice Mittenwald, probably first half of the 19th century with a german silver mounted bow.

The description is containing some nonsense, not really worth a translation IMO.

Lord almighty please do NOT read this thread before drifting off, Nightmares will be inevitable...

Condolences would be had if I was in fact married to BC I assure you, knowing myself I would make a point of reproducing "il dulce suono" during the honey moon, bloody splinters from what would be left of his "instrument" purchases would emanate from his head, torso, gonades I guarantee ....

Speaking of gonads, there is ofc the huge "problem" between my legs which would pretty much make the term "wifey" pretty much senseless..

And what do we have here? A throwback, if you will, to the OP.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FINE-OLD-AUSTRIAN-MASTER-VIOLIN-ENZENSPERGER-video-ANTIQUE-247-/311428895595

Another offering from the now notorious old-violin-international, purveyor of the The Heidegger itself, complete with a supposed Viennese instrument and topped off with a video of the same nervous-looking chap, only now with a striped shirt and cleanly shaven head, perhaps not of his own doing. He can still play scales but now with the passion of a 40-year-old virgin about to call his first hooker. When he's not closing his eyes, fantasizing about Constança from Porto, Portugal dry humping him in a dark corner of some seedy strip joint, he appears to wake up, possibly to the smell of her fart, and become dead behind the eyes once again almost as if he is playing the violin at gunpoint, trapped deep in this luthier's dungeon somewhere in an abandoned building.

He exits screen left in a damn hurry, like a POW signaling to the camera in code that he is in fact a captive, of his creepy dad, who has put him to work since he was a once-hopeful young man, practicing scales and creating strange perspective murals of roman-style architecture. Can we finally figure out who this kid is, where he is being detained, and organize an extraction team to unshackle him from his new eeebony restraints, and free him from this "workshop?" Or maybe I have it all wrong and he is the master and the creepy sounding man introducing the violins is his "human project." Fuck.

Is this Viennese?
