Fjodor Posted September 1, 2018 Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2018 I've been busy restoring an old flea market find. -new fingerboard - bushed peg holes - thinned the ribs and top ( ribs where up to 3 mm thick, top over 110g) - new bass bar -neck reset Sounds surprisingly good! Fjodor Posted September 2, 2018 Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2018 Do you mean the gouge with the light colored wood handle? It's a Dastra brand gouge. I have several and do not have a problem that they loose the edge fast. Another set of Marples gouges is much worse in this respect. Alder ribs as well? I've thought that Alder could be an interesting choice for violas. In a previous life I used alder quite often. Not too dissimilar from poplar or willow.
