Fjodor
I had a good player try the latest violin and asked for some feedback. He thought it was good and easy to play on and balanced, but suggested to try an other e string brand. I recorded some short bits with the cell phone. Jim Bress
A nice pleasent tone. Congratulations! -Jim
Peter K-G
Taking into account that this is a birch back violin, it projects surprisingly well. It is very difficult to make any judgement from recordings, hope I get to try it soon If you remember the concerto we went to, this is a clip from the recording on Ipad and it sound nothing like the live performance DG6.mp3
Fjodor
Thanks Jim and Peter, I agree a phone recording does not do justice to any violin. Peter you are welcome to come and try it sometime I'd love to try your latest violin also.
Fjodor
I wanted a wider model, so I decided to make a new mold. Hopefully it will result in something that looks like a del gesu. The mold is based on a grand Amati pattern but wider.
Peter K-G
If you need a precise forma drawing you should ask Addie. He is very generous and has very great full scale drawings in pdf format. I got my Strad G forma from him and it is perfect.
Fjodor
I have seen some of Addie´s drawings and they look great.I also have Francois Denis´ book "Traite de Luthierie", that has instructions on how to draw up many molds, including several used by Stradivari.I was interested to make a Guarneri inspired violin this time. According to Denis, he has identified two molds used by Guarneri del Gesu. The smaller one corresponds well to a "Grand Amati" (except for the corners) and the bigger one is based on the same pattern, swiveled to make it a bit wider. Peter K-G
Really nice!
Fjodor
I think your violin sounds very good!Thank you Rue, I think they are getting better as I'm learning. They are always a bit different from each other anyway. It is funny how a good player can get the best out of instrument.
Fjodor
I consider the back finished, the maple seems to be low density. Some numbers: Arch height ~16mm Weight 89,5 g Graduations ~5mm - 2.5mm (pretty similar to Plowden dG) M5 ~357 Hz M2 (Uncertain but I get a clear peak at 348Hz Maybe an octave higher?) Peter K-G
That is a light back plate! M2 should not be hard to find. Search for the node at upper bout a little bit inside the purfling and knock lower bout little lower than the middle in front of the microphone. Use your index finger knuckle. You should also clearly hear this mode that rings lower. When you hit the nodal line of M5, M2 is heard clearly.
Fjodor
Thanks,I can hear the tap tone (M2) very clearly. I think it is the FFT program on my phone that shows a "strange" peak. Maybe an harmonic?.Half of 348, would seem more normal ...I did not spend so much time with it though, so I can probably figure it out. Peter K-G
I know you can Anyway, your work improves rapidly, I'm impressed! Please share more images as you progress with the violin.
Fjodor
Thanks Peter, I made some progress with the top. F-holes are cut. My 3 year old son likes to help out in the workshop.
Peter K-G
Next generation makers are always better, and one can see he has got talent too I think you would have enjoyed this: http://www.thestradsound.com/ongoing/comparingviolinswithmyfriend Hope we get another opportunity when you finished yours. I left one in his shop, one with lower back density and "smaller" sound. http://www.thestradsound.com/ongoing/remakingofviolin2010done
Fjodor
Yes, nothing is much more interesting than comparing violins Would have love to have been there. I'm trying to find some material for a bass bar. Managed to get a knot free piece from my a small plank of spruce but I accidentally sawed it on the "slab" hmm maybe I use it anyway. Don Noon
I'm trying to find some material for a bass bar. Managed to get a knot free piece from my a small plank of spruce but I accidentally sawed it on the "slab" hmm maybe I use it anyway. It's a little fussier to fit (cutting across the rings at a shallow angle), but it works just as well.
Fjodor
Thank you Daryl!Don, that feels reassuring. The year rings does not feel so hard on this spruce so I think it's doable.
Fjodor
The "slab" bar is installed. It WAS a bit cumbersome to fit.
Don Noon
The "slab" bar is installed. It WAS a bit cumbersome to fit. Told ya so. I found that using a flat file does a good job of leveling the hard and soft grains during the fitting process.
