Another shot of NC#3 in natural light. Colour matching is pretty good.

 

Very unlikely to be able to make the VSA competition entry, so will be posting some more photos of the completed violins when the light is good.

  Is there a story behind this pic?

 

 

The extraordinary thing about this monster is that the trunk was so significantly bent before it snapped at the 'fresh wood' base.  Usually, the others I have seen on their side are straight and broken off at a weakened decomposed stump.

 

So there must be a story, but I don't know it.

Peter KG asked about my varnishing, so here is an old photo of the Northern Renaissance Fulton's.

 

I think I can do better now with my own colophony or commercially available varnishes.

 

Oh shut up -_- That looks amazingly sparkly, I absolutely LOVE this effect on new violins.

 

I'm jealous!

No need to be jealous.

 

A few comments:

> The 'sparkly' effect came from rubbing silica and rosin oil into the wood surface, followed by Fulton's varnish.  Very little rosin oil was used.

> I am not sure whether rosin oil polymerizes, so have not used it since those instruments were made.

> NC 1-5 are less sparkly, partly because the sealer/ground is different, and partly because different spruce species vary in this property (Engelmann spruce is not particularly sparkly). I used 3 different spruces for these five. The European spruces have a much more pronounced sparkle.

Re Colophony cooking thread.

 

Limed rosin varnish with a little pigment. 

 

Pretty transparent, but not well captured in photos.  The Engelmann top is not very 'sparkly'.

Comparing the photo of the hanging instrument with those on the chair, it is clear that I created a significant distortion of body shape when I took the latter photos.

 

The viola is not short and tubby.
