An absolutely magnificent pair.

Yep - from a superb off-cut of jet-black ebony with no pores.

And how about the rest of the story....coming out of...or into retirement?

Are you referring to the nuts?

Peter KG asked about my varnishing, so here is an old photo of the Northern Renaissance Fulton's.

I think I can do better now with my own colophony or commercially available varnishes.

Thanks.

This is colophony/mastic/linseed oil varnish made in 2010 on Robson balsam ground.  The varnish has some nice dichromatism varying from greenish brown to ruby red when in a drop.

I added a small amount of Old Holland Madder Crimson (C28) and W&N Rose Madder (587).  These built a deep ruby colour which was nicely toned done by some multi-colour 'dirt'.

ps. The very bright sun made it difficult to show the colours properly.

pps.  The varnish is chippy as I found out this afternoon when one of the violins slipped off the cradle gently hitting the side of the scroll (2 dings accumulated on that one).
