What type of colophony are you starting with? Yes it is dark For every cook I got bolder. This last batch is as far as I'm going to go, because it will be too dark if I go further. The colophony is ordinary pine rosin from Finnish pine trees, here is from another cook when it starts to melt Finnish pine trees:

Peter K-G
Price worthy tool from Dictum, even my bad Stanley works with a well sharpened blade
Urban Luthier
I enjoy your varnish making posts. I have one of the veritas guides as well. I mostly use it for awkward blades I cant sharpen freehand. Lee valley just published a page on sharpening (more for hobbyist but still some useful info). Peter K-G
Vaiennut viulu (my second 1997 and it has not been just hanging on the wall, as you can se from the worn) Missing the player, not the violin, that is now back with me
Peter K-G
Super stress situation, but Covid Violin soundbox closed. Not my best work (just working with what the days have to offer), but strong and confident that it will be a powerful one. Inside sized with usual quark/slaked lime size Back coupling freq. (at 40 % RH) 288/335 Hz
Peter K-G
Fjodor, Thank you for the inspiration and I really enjoyed playing your violins! Please, give the varnishing process some thoughts? What you have ongoing has way too much linseed oil in it! Harsh to say, but I would strip everythinng and start over, done this myself many times . In the end you will get rewarded

In the end you will get rewarded Thanks for the visit and the varnish. I put a coat on the violin and it dried much faster than the previous coats I am not completely satisfied overall but I am not at the "stripping" point yet :,-) I think it will look fine once finished and polished out, No doubt it would be better to start over and do everything with the same varnish. Now violating the fat over lean rule etc... But there will be more violins, and there is always the option to redo.

That's a great attitude You can have as much varnish you like (for violins, för att nu gardera emot att du inte börjar lackera matsalsbord o dylikt ;)) I'm going to cook varnish every summer and violin production is not keeping up
Peter K-G
Wood fingerprint... Just looked through my images, searching for something, saw a picture of "my ongoing" with a neck glued on.... for some milliseconds, hey wait a minute... I haven't glued the neck yet. Clearly the top wood is from the same tree and when you have just worked on a top you remember its "fingerprint"

And it is going to be on of my latest/ongoing violin, postin images later.... Sorry about the bad image quality, I can tell it's awesome and it dries in normal "lysrör" exposure. Härdar på 4-8 timmar i Philips flug fångar lysrör (UV) och 8-14 timmar med vanligt lysrör, beroende på hur mycket balsam terpentin utspedd. I'm going to be a Varnish Master! You will get all you need for free! No pigments needed

Peter K-G
My site: www.thestradsound.com based on Google "classic sites" isn't editable anymore (deprecated, have to move it to something else) So I'll use my bench more for awhile. I thought I had to open it and correct it but no. It still has its original mellow sweetest sound! To my surprise the modes hasn't change and are as they have been for over 20 years. Back then I had no understanding of playing and the owner made a new bridge and trimmed the neck. Another lesson for me even this day. This is the best neck I have played on, smooth and easy to reach and find notes. Everything is rounded just right! It's rather thin near nut 23.2 mm. Played it for a week now and my son commented (WTF), why have you been tweaking with your fiddles all this time. This is the best one you have ever made! Peter K-G
My violin cabinet is getting empty. Giving away most of my Soil projects. Upper shelf nr. 1 and 2, next "Il Cannone of the Soils" Lower already given away. Time to start production!
