Fjodor Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Very nice. Can I ask what models the violin and viola are?
Alberto R. Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Spectacular as always, what kind of wood is the viola scroll?
christian bayon Posted February 10, 2014 Author Report Posted February 10, 2014 It's Carlo Antonio Testore freely inspired and the violin is Del Gésú, around 1739, model. the wood is walnut on the viola head.

Francis Posted March 7, 2014 Report Posted March 7, 2014 Would you mind sharing your technique for the craquelé?
christian bayon Posted March 9, 2014 Author Report Posted March 9, 2014 Last Friday, in Paris, Bartok concerto nr1, with a violin I made in 2005, at the intermission, the violinist speak about his instrument. (After the Haydn symphony) http://www.francemusique.fr/player/resource/21837-25427 Francis, tomorrow I'll take time to respond to you.
christian bayon Posted March 11, 2014 Author Report Posted March 11, 2014 Would you mind sharing your technique for the craquelé? It is not difficult to have craquelé, what is difficult is mastering the size and deepness of it. The system is always the same, when the varnish is not completely dry, you want to dry faster the outer part of the varnish, you can use an hair dryer 2 days after varnishing, if it is early and strong, the craquelé will be big and deep, if you wait more and do it gently, it will be softer. It is important to remember your varnish should protect the instrument, so, don´t over damage it. After, you can enhance it with black or brown.
Rue Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 That is exciting! Thanks for the links! I actually saw her playing at the closing ceremonies...

If the varnish has dried thoroughly already you can soften it again by spraying it with alcohol from an air brush. It also helps when drying the cracking agent with a hair dryer to resoften the cracking agent with a little water or a fresh application and then dry it more with the hair dryer. This will give the craquelé more complexity.
Francis Posted March 12, 2014 Report Posted March 12, 2014 Thank you for your reply! This is the first time I hear about the hair dryer method. Is your varnish oil, or alcohol?
curious1 Posted March 12, 2014 Report Posted March 12, 2014 Thank you for your reply! This is the first time I hear about the hair dryer method. Is your varnish oil, or alcohol? Oil, but works with alcohol varnish too.
christian bayon Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 Mix of 1710 Stradivari and modern violin.
Peter K-G Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 One can clearly hear that at least one of them is a Strad
vlyosifov Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Amazing video! Two fantastic players, two fantastic instruments! Svetlin had to wait for a very, very long time to get instrument which suits his level. I am wondering how he felt turning to his right side and seeing that still there is a room to upgrade to a better one...
Peter K-G Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 One can clearly hear that at least one of them is a Strad Just to clearify, I ment no offence! In this piece and environment, without video (only recording) I don't think anyone could really say which one is the original. I felt the first one gave more, but he is also standing more in the front and plays more firmly.
christian bayon Posted April 10, 2014 Author Report Posted April 10, 2014 Latest violin ready, like everybody, Del Gésù inspired. (It will be easy for the expert in the future, if it´s a Guarneri model, it is early XXI century!)
