Jerry Lynn Posted May 13, 2013 Report Posted May 13, 2013 More money would mean a more solid attribution as to maker, or area that is more commonly paid more for etc (french, italian). Ben,Jacob, Martin, Jerry...does this sound right? jeff I think that's a safe generalization. Hence why you see people posting ID pics on this message board. When pricing an instrument for sale I always start with asking "Do I know what this is?" If I'm uncomfortable with what it is, it get's shelved until I can figure it out (consulting with those who know more, more research etc.) If I have a general idea as to school and time period I try to go further and perhaps get a more solid attribution. Sometimes an instrument gets sold with just having an idea as to time period and geographic location. When picking out instruments at auction, it pays to buy things you like and are passionate about (and are hopefully sure of!).I have no comment to the OP's instrument other than the warnings that have already been given.
Roger Hargrave Posted May 13, 2013 Report Posted May 13, 2013 Mr. Duffy moved to California many years ago and died a few years back. If his shop in Florida is still active it's probably his ex-wife Barbara who runs it. A very nice lady. His certs would probably not be the most honored, IMO. Duffy's shop had the most romantic address. I never went there, but I often dreamed of working there. As I remember it the address was: Coconut Grove, Palm Beach, Florida.
Roger Hargrave Posted May 13, 2013 Report Posted May 13, 2013 Oh the violin! I once saw a Nicolas Vuillaume with similar, but better ebony edging. However, this violin is not a Nicolas Vuillaume. In fact I am not even sure if the Nicolas Vuillame was one.

I don't remember the name of the street. You would have loved it.

Don't have his address from then with me, but I do remember the sign hanging around the corner on the back wall over his desk. ...something about "old age and treachery winning over youth and innocence..."
